A little saftey message for the day. When de-burring a part on a lathe, do not get the file into the chuck! This happened to a guy last week at my day job. Musta hurt when they pulled it out!
lesson #1 always have a wooden handle on your files lesson #2 always hold the file with your fingers, not your palm I learned that from my brother who learned it the same way your co-worker did.
I was taught to always file left handed when holding the part in a chuck. If you are filing left handed and the file gets hung up when the machine spits it out you are not standing in line with the trajectory of the file. It ain't just your hand that will get hit if you lose your grip on the file. If you are filing left handed your hands are not blocking your view of the work.
ooowwwwwwww!!!!!!! I had my lathe take off the end of my thumb a couple of months ago. The same lathe broke my ring finger on my right hand a year ago. I hate my lathe...
They also make "lathe" files. Which are longer than "regular" files. makes it easy to straddle the part with your hands spread far apart enough for increased control - plus having the file longer places the end far from the lathe jaw - you can still hit the jaws but it's alot less likely to impale yourself. FWIW
Had an employee do the exact same thing a couple of months ago only did not go through his hand. He did not have a handle on the file as required in our shop. Also, most of our guys run the lathe in reverse when filing, safer that way.
I could have gone without seeing that picture. Does make a strong case for using file handles though! For the guys who run a lathe backwards when using a file: I'm guessing the lathe spins towards you in normal operation--thus, driving the file into you if it bites. If it's spinning away from you, is there a chance it could grab the file and launch it toward your chest or face? Longer files with wooden handles just seems like the smart plan, regardless. I would think that shop ower makes file handles mandatory on every file in the building from now on. -Brad
