Ever since I could make car noises. Had 5 or 6 before I was 16. I still find I like everything, well almost.
My dad was racing the night I was born. That's back in the day when they raced 5 nights a week in California. I'm the blonde 65 years ago.
My intro to cars was through my late dad, he was a semi truck mechanic and I would tag along with him on weekends. One of the other workers there was building a custom, this was the early 70s, so that must have switched on something because while still 15, during 1977, I bought a rusty old 35 Chev roadster, a 60 Belair, as a donor for the 35 but still a driver and a 64 Cortina two door that was someone else's stalled rebuild. I rebuilt the Cortina, wrecked the 60 for parts and by the mid 80's finished the 35 Chev. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Got a brand new pedal car when I was 4 years old in 1967. I had my first Eldon 1/32 slot car set when I was 6 and had a Cox dune buggy at 7. By the time I was eight, I was building car models, sketching cars, helping my Dad and brothers with their cars and I always had a interest in Customs and Rods, even at a time when they weren't popular.
At about 13 I bought a 42 Plymouth Club Coupe from my older brother Ron. I know where it is even today. In Arnprior, on White Lake Road just up from the Madawaska bridge. I know that because I sold it to Eddie Moorhead when we moved away and he told me it was parked beside his family's cottage down by the river bank when they flooded the whole area for the Madawaska power dam. Since no one has retrieved it (I checked) it is still there. It was an American production early 42 with the chrome painted over. It had been smucked in the grill so we installed a 46 fender and grill assembly we bought from Gary Moorhead (Moorhead Towing and the first hot rodder I ever met). It had received a Canadian engine somewhere along the way which is 2 inches longer and so the motor mounts had to be fudged a bit and the fan was almost kissing the rad. Fun field car for a 13 year old. However wish I had it today. don
All my life. Early on it was models and small gas powered toys. Bought my first model A (1930 model) in 1960 at age 13. Could only drive it in a field next to our house.
I don't know how old i was when i got into cars but i was young ( I'am 14 years old ) Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
It was a progression from building models at around 8..... that's a good place to start dreaming about building a hot rod. Then to slot cars and then mini bikes and go carts.... I was probably 14 when I bought a 54 Ford for $5.00 and towed it home.... got the 6 running... made a low rider out of it.... primed it with a blue tint....frenched the antenna.... put 13" wheels on it ( that it would light up easy). I remember painting my sisters 58 Chevys dash with lace.... stuff like that. I was lucky enough to take some pic's of the mini bike..... Sutter Jr High metal shop project that dad got involved with we'd stay up till midnight working on it.... some of the best times.
I was 12, I saw my first old car I bought while I was on the bus to football practice... I borrowed money from my dad and it took me a year of constant working to pay him back... He owns a hotel, so I was cleaning rooms, sweeping sidewalks, working the front desk, plunging toilets, etc, etc for $5 an hour...
I was minus 6 when my dad was 20, chasing my future mom around in grand dads 39 ford. Been hooked ever since.
When my Dad overhauled the engine of our family car, a '52 Henry J, when I was six, I was hooked. He wasn't mechanically minded at all, but borrowed my uncle's tools and did the wrenching at my uncle's junkyard. My Mom was so amazed and pleased that she just never stopped praising him. I thought that was so cool, I was fascinated with taking stuff apart from then on.
Probably right after I was born, there is a picture of me with a toy car in my hands when I was about 2.
I was 4 when I got into a car and slammed my hand in the door! Oh wait, you mean.... I think I started liking cars when I realized their true meaning, freedom, beer, girls, beer, girls, beer! The desire to have a car meant wrenching, because the old man was damn sure not going to assist my "run for freedom" I was given a junk car by a neighbor and with help from school mates got it running, went out and got a job so I could make improvements on the junker (49 Plymouth) After a couple more junkers, I bought a 64 Pontiac Gran Prix 421 Tri-power and 4 speed, This one lit the fire, first car I had driven that could set you back in the seat and hold you there! Every Monday I made a trip to the used tire guy to replace what I burned off over the weekend. 18years old and stupid!!!!!!!!!
was born into a car family , family worked for Ford in Chicago at both plants , and My Dad had a early 60's Merc Marauder 2 door till the early 70' that hauled ass , and mom had t-birds ( had one of the weird suicide 4 door ones for 2 years ( mom ( bottle blonde but natural airhead ) forgot to close the door and almost ripped it off pulling into the garage before she noticed , screwed up the garage door bad ) , my uncles, one built the motors, one painted the cars , and one was a ass ( still is ) my dad worked on alot of Ford cars as one of our neighbors owned a service station and my dad picked up the over flow for them but it was only Fords and worked on them on nights and weekends , it was neat growing up in the late 60's my dad and uncles built a few drag cars it was a family thing , my dad would do the driving and the uncles would do the other work , Mom put a kebosh on that after a while , ( this is what was the start of them breaking up ) but I loved the 60's Fords but was not able to find them when I was a teen , so I went as the family calls it to the dark side as I liked GMs flowing lines not boxes of the 70's , I walked away from cars for a while because of money and school but came back , should have looked for older cars but got into the 70's models , then got tired of them and found my 50 . I like the swoopy lines and curves of the older cars , should have gotten into them sooner as they are easier to fix than the unirustbuckets .
as long as I could remember some say I was born with a wrench in my hand lol my dad and grandfather had a auto shop before I was born they did a little of everything engine/paint mostly on non hamb friendly cars and later on he had two other shops. I learn how to do paint/body at about 7 from then on I was a really hooked
My older brothers all drag raced and started taking me with them when I was about 8 years old [1967] I still have my first Indy Nationals pit pass from 67. Grew up with 427 Galaxies, 428 cj Fairlanes and HiPo Mustangs sitting around the house all the time. Remember going to Ed Martin Ford with my brother to see Bob Glidden for help or to check out what he was working on. We would follow him and Etta to Beech Bend, Muncie, Edgewater and many other DivIII tracks. Got to go along and visit the Ulrey Bros shop in Seymour many times also. They had everything you could ever want to see in "Lightweight" Fords in their shop. I have dual quad-tri-power F.E. strongly imprinted in my brain! Somebody please help me!
All my life? Dad always took me to car shows and helped him work on cars when i was old enough to hand him wrenches. But i got into it big time when i turned 15 and started pinstriping. I caught the bug and now I'm sick in the head! But all car guys are. Made some great friends so far and can't wait to make some more! Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
All my life, I am 15 and could name every make and model of the cars going down the street when I was 3. My first car was a 1963 galaxy when I was 13, sold it and now I have a 1948 gmc truck Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Bought my first car, a 28 Ford Sport Coupe for $85.00 in 55 when I was 14 years old. Don't know how long before that it was when I fell in love with Model A's, but I remember seeing a Model A coupe sitting in my uncle's barn before I reached double digits age. About a year after buying my first, I spotted a 29 Sport Coupe sitting behind a barn. Bought that one for $35.00 the next day. Since then there has been a 29 Roadster P.U., a 21 Dodge Brothers touring car and a 23 Studebaker touring car with an Ardun Merc in it. My present car is the coupe in my avatar. It has a pro built 3/4 race 4 banger in it.
as far back as i can remember. grandpa & uncles were into cars, i was exposed to cars from birth... just like my kids are (as well as motorcycles and damn near anything with an engine and wheels)
way back! Bought my 1st car magazine when I was 9-10. Saw a rod for sale & tried to get my parents to buy it for me. Figured I'd have it payed off by the time I was old enough to have a license, they didn't go for that for some reason...
I was 10 yrs. old here. Was subscribing to Rod & Custom when I was 11 yrs. old. Bought my first "real" car at 15. It was a '53 Ford Mainline. I can't remember a time when I wasn't intrigued by anything automobile related.
I have been intressed in cars so long i can rember And i liked sound of V8 as small boy but it was seldom to hear it The most cars was with 4 cylinders and still they are that her in sweden But now have i my own V8 cars
Just since I was old enough to feed myself. ...I would bite my sandwiches into the shape of cars, adding round pickle slices as wheels with tooth picks. When Highway Pioneers came out in the early 1950's, I had to get and build as many as I could get my parents to buy for me. When the AMT/SMP models came out in 1958, I was already hooked on cars. Then at about 12, I got my first car.
