I've been trying to get my hands on a set for years....But they seemed to be more than what i paid for the car...lolol..So i had no choice but to keep it simple so to say....I also checked with Bob Wilson who seems like an awesome guy to do business with and i believe he was selling his for 450 bux....wich is alot better than $11,500 that i just seen them go for on e-bay....Plus he will machine a set up your Buick fins and Ford hubs for a small fee...So thats going to be the way i go!

It would be interesting to see what that guy is building...Thats for sure!

  4. I ran a set on my '27 roadster for a couple of years- total crap! Very, Very heavy and needed tons of peddle pressure to slow down. In one weekend I went from 16in wires, grooved Ascots, and Kinmounts to 15in steelies, radial tires and Halibrand midget spot brakes- 2nd best weekend of my life!!! It took 48 pounds of unsprung weight per side off the car. That's a lot on a light car.

    Dave,

The davis was not a trike, but a four passenger car single seat car. THere was only on mfg'd It's on dispaly @ The Petersen. It does have the kinmonts on it. There was a Rex Burnett cut away in one of the early Rod mags that showed the brakes as well as the flathead engine mechanicals. It was made in Los Angeles, but not enough interest in a 3 wheeled single seat car when a Tucker or perhaps a 49 Olds,Cad w/a ohv V8 was just around the corner. Many promisses were made & broken during the immediate post war years;).
    Achemy,
I know a guy here that says his set front & rear are worth about $10k. and I know for fact that he has turned that down.

If Bob Wilson does produce them, will the along the function fakes design with a new Wilwood unit mounted inside a Kinmont style outer:confused:
Cause if they are, that would net a rodder great stopping power with the look of the original as well as improved brake cooling when being used with a steel unopen wheel unlike the SO-CAL Functional Fakes design.
I hope I didn't just give somebody a doable idea if it isn't already being done.
Man that could've been my next product!!!!!:D

Kevin, when I mentioned "trike", it was to distinguish the 3-Wheeled Davis car from the later, non-related, 4-wheeled Davis car.

And yes, years ago I spoke to most of the Davis owners, and previous owners trying to track down parts for Kinmonts.

Bob had drawn up plans for original style Kinmonts. I think he did make some minor modifications so that you only had to make two styles instead of the existing four styles to make a complete set for a car. From memory, most of Bob's pieces were designed to be interchangable with the originals. He didn't have any interest in making covers. If you want something like that, he makes "Skeleton" Lincoln backing plates that can be mated to Ford/Buick/International drums.

That's crazy money for those ebay Kinmonts.

Like Modernbeat said, Bob won't build covers like the 'Buick-esque' So-Cal brakes. I know for a fact that he has a couple of the real deal Kinmonts under his workbench that he was taking measurements and engineering from. I'm not sure where he stands on the reproductions...I do know that he has been building tons of his Lincoln brakes lately.

I'm going to see Bob in the next week or so (he's drilling my original Mor-drop axle for me) and I'll ask him if he's made any headway or not.

I'm pretty sure that the demand for his Skeleton brakes hasn't been what he expected...probably because most people don't understand them or even know about them. But they are super cool! We have a set here in the shop...I'll try to post some pictures this week.

And as far as buying from Bob goes...you couldn't buy your brakes from a better or more knowledgeable guy. I heard that one of Bob's acquaintances once said: "There are only two people in this world I trust...Jesus Christ and Bob Wilson." :)

Yeah, but the e-bay listing is at $16K. So I'll stick around and see if anybody bids. Guess if you want them and can afford them that's great. there are a lot of hotrods out there that aren't too bad for $16000.

So I went to this guys house with my friend to pick up a super nice original unmolested deuece frame about a year ago. We were using it to build a frame jig. This cat was out there. WAY out there. I wont mention any names. Tons of cool old parts, mainly deuece stuff. Lots of NOS speed equipment etc. Sitting outside his garage in several plastic milk crates covered in leaves and snow I notice something. A complete set of Kinmonts! No BS. I couldnt believe it. Just sitting out there in the crates. Inside the garage, with no garage door no less, was a genuine real steel '32 roadster covered in snow and leaves and crap, and a shelf full of Kinmonts..... Almost made me sick. Saw he sold a set last summer at a swap meet. High $$$$$. Dont remember the exact price.

I know this is an old thread but if i start a new one then you catch flack for not doing a search.
We are working on restoring a set of Kinmonts for a car in the shop now. our set is complete front and rear with the emergency brake set up.
We are starting to do a little work on seeing what is available for wheel cylinders parts. We do have rebuild kits on the way to get some of the right parts, but i thought i read in one thread that a chrysler wheel cylinder internals would work.
Is there anyone currently running these on their car, and what can you expect out of the them for stopping power. I know Ken Gross has a set on his car.

Chrysler used Ausco Lambert brakes, similar in appearance but a completely different design. They were standard equipment on Imperial limousines and optional on other Chryslers, 1949 - 1954.
