Hey guys I just purchased a 39 Pontiac 2 door sedan not sure if it's a deluxe or special. The car is getting a new interior and 700r teams installed as we speak. I am searching forums and sources for parts and contacts for future , what I'm finding is not a lot of 39 Pontiac stuff out there . Is a 39 Pontiac not popular, was there not a lot manufactured? Last I was told that the Pontiac and Chevy was basically the same thing is this true to a point do some of the parts interchange? Thanks
I don't think they're too rare around here. I sold a pretty complete but rough 2 door sedan last year for $250 to a guy who lives less than 5 miles from me to use as a parts car for the one he has. They do look a lot like a '39 Chev, but never compared them side by side to see the differences. I'm sure there are experts on here that can tell you if there is any interchange between the two.
I always considered the 39's an orphan year. The 1940 got smoothed out and nicely restyled. They both had a very attractive roof line on the coupes and the 4 door sedan series. 1939 sedans are not rare. New..... They built and sold thousands of them. I've owned both a 39 and 40. The 40 was a fabulous car and I still have major remorse over selling it.
They share some components with their GM family members, but they can be rare. Most fo the drive train was pretty much the same until they switched to OHV V8 in the 50's. It's a bit more rare than say a chevy of the same year, so that's always cool. Is the suspension been upgraded?
I recently sold a VERY solid, running 39 4-dr sedan. there are lots of them still around, but I don't think much will interchange with Chevrolet. better try Olds of the same series.
Very little interchange including front end parts are different if it is 6 or 8 cyl. I have a 40 coupe and my buddy just traded his 39 2door sedan.
I installed an Olds 303" Into my '40 coupe. Hassle to position it. Everything was in the way. Took a lot of backyard enginering to get it up and running. Loved the car though.
If your Pontiac is a 25 series the glass will interchange with chev. I believe the doors and deck lid will also as the basic body shell is the same size but the floors are all different because the chassis is totally different than a chevy I'l bet the dash will swap over too but it's made different for different gauges etc etc. Pontiac used 3 different body series in 39 and the 25 series [the smallest one] is the only one that will swap these parts over.with chav....all other series Pontiacs are bigger. The 27-28 series will swap some parts with Olds and the 29 series will swap some parts with Buick/Cad..
Cool thanks for the replies , to answer some questions posted the suspension is upgraded the rear has coil over. The reason I posted is that I'm restoring it and my tastes is I love the original character of the old cars but admire the engineering of hot rods so um going to try for a good blend of both. I'm missing some of the body trims and things that would give it the character I mentioned.
The motor is a unmodified 350 but I'm thinking a 427 would be awesome on the other hand I always loved the original hemi from the 50's any ideas ?
Rick A 421 or nutin' I don't know how rare a 39 poncho is I do know you don't see a lot of them around though.
I'll give direct answers to you basic original question. 1. Your car is not rare, it was a mass production model. 2. On the other hand it is very rare as traditional hot rod material, which is why you will not find much about them in the early hot rod world. For these reasons, Pontiac club or resto sites would probably be much richer sources of information and parts. Good luck with it. I'm sure you'll discover plenty of passionate Poncho people soon enough.
