How To - 55 Ford Fairlane Steering Box Adjustment

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by sobastrace, May 23, 2008.

  1. Hi All,
What is the proper way to get some slack out of the steering box on a 55 ford. I replaced the pitman arm to the wheels. Everything is new or rebuilt and it still has a scary amount of play.

I do not see a traditional adjuster nut/stud combo like on my chevy. I have not unpacked my shop manual for this car yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

It's there. look on end oppsit of the pitman arm. As I remember some fords had a cap/dome nut over the screw . Remove that and the screw is there, also they had a star washer looking lock that the nut held down.Remember there is a worm shaft bearing adjustmant also ,think you got to pull the box out of the car to do that. Usually that is not the problem. Any side play in the pitman/sector shaft bearings can not be adjusted out.

  3. Thanks John,
I will get at that tomorrow morning.
