I'm new to hot rodding and I recently bought a 32 ford that has disk brakes and 5 lug wheels. How would I go about changing it to a more traditional setup with spindle mount wheels and drum brakes? Any help would be appreciated.
A disc brake setup has a rotor on a hub (or an integrated rotor AND hub) which mounts on the spindle. A drum brake setup has a drum on a hub (or an integrated drum AND hub) on the spindle. A spindle mount wheel IS the hub. I have only seen disc brakes on them. In that case, the disc rotor mounted directly to the wheel. I suppose that it would be possible (if not totally impractical) to directly mount a drum to the wheel, but what would be the point? If your question is how to get to spindle mount wheels in the front, and drums in the rear, then that is another story. In that case, unbolt what you don't want, and replace it with what you want. You have not provided enough information for a more specific answer. What front suspension do you currently have, and what rear axle do you have, and what is the origin of the disc setup in the rear?
Early Ford juice brake on a round back spindle, and a spindle mount wheel on a square back spindle. Note the absence of brakes on the spindle mount wheel. In the case where brakes are present, the rotor mounts directly to the wheel.
You guys are awesome. Thanks for your help. The pictures really helped. And I want to switch to drums all around.
Ahh, for that, we will need to know what front suspension is under the car now. If the OP can take and post a picture from the angle of the one featuring the early Ford juice brakes in my previous post (the all gloss black stuff), we will get it all straightened out, right quick.
