Hi guys,,,,, I have a set of American Mags from my 66 gto from back in the day ,. I plan to put them on my 38 ford pickup when I get to it. But being a dumb *** I left them sitting dirty for a zillion years, now they are really dirty and corrided. how do I clean these so they are show quality??? What do I use ? Thanks for all your help..JOE
From an old Jimmie Hendrix song hey Joe, if your trying to be shiney, and want to be show quality, disregard this post. I don't know which style Americans you have, but I had the same problem with my polished 5 spokes, I just scuffed them with a red scotchbrite, problem solved. Here'e some pics.
Yep, a scotchbrite and some soap and water will get the job done. Depending on what you are trying to do, you may need more than that. I have restored a lot of polished aluminum rims by wet sanding first with 240 grit, then 400, then 600. Once they are smooth, you can finish them off with some Mothers by hand or use a polishing wheel like the Mothers Powerball. Of course a lot of shops would use specialty buff pads for this, but I am guessing if you are asking that you are not set up for that. The methods above will work fine. Good luck!
