Projects How to cut 48 Ford wishbone ??

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 48coupe, Apr 1, 2009.

  1. I need to split the wishbone on my 48 Ford to make room for a different trans. Where to cut, any kits available, pics ?, websites with instructions, etc.

i dont know if this is exactly right ! but i usually put a piece of 3/4 inch tape against the factory weld and cut on the other side of it , usually works out being the right diameter for weld in bungs where it is cut !

  3. I also need to cut the wishbone behind the axle by the tie rod so it can be bent out far enough to line up with the frame. BUT, exactly where to cut ??

  4. if you buy a wishbone spitting kit from places like Ch***is engineering it will come with instructions on where to cut the end so you can weld in the bungs. don't cut the wishbones to spread them...heat and bend the spring hangers

This is pretty close. The casting is sleeved into the tube an inch or so. You can use a 1/8" drill to make a couple of test holes working away from the weld until you locate the edge of the casting. Cut there.

  6. Guess I need more info on exactly where to heat and bend them.

measure your spring hangers eye to eye before you cut the bones....

cut the bones and mount em to your car however you choose....

heat and bend the hangers infront of the perch pin/axle and try to get them to the same dimension as origional, and paralell to each other, use some long extentions to give you some leverage and idea of where they are at ...let them cool naturally

bend at the thickest part possible and stay away from the eyes themselves, good luck

  8. I have since found out that the 48 bones "DO NOT" get bent out so they line up with the frame rail, like we all think of when splitting bones. DO NOT bend them at all !! When the bones are cut they are naturally shorter and this puts the ends to the outside of the X and forwards 5-6 inches of the original position. They are reattached at this point to a bracket that is bolted on the bottom of the frame that comes in the kit. They are done this way so as to retain the clearance needed when turning the front tires.
