1952-59 Ford How to dismantle door locks?

I need to get the spring and mechanism off the old ones and install them on the new ones. I can't see how to remove them unless it involves turning the key, which ****s cuz I don't have one!

 

Any good locksmith can make you a key.

The last three members who responded to your question obviously did not understand what you are trying to do but I do understand. Unlike the lock cylinders for the ignition switch and trunk, there is no tiny ****on to depress at 1/4 turn of the key to remove the cylinder. Therefore, I would think that the only way that you are going to be able to remove that tailpiece from the old lock without a key so you can use it on your replacement door lock is to remove the lock cylinder from the old lock. Try prying the small tin cover off the top of the old lock cylinder which holds the springs and tumblers. Turn it upside down and pour out the springs and tumblers while you pull on the tailpiece. This should release the cylinder and the tailpiece as a unit. Once you get the old tailpiece off maybe you can figure out how to install it on your new lock but you may need to take it to a locksmith if you can't do it yourself.

 

Thanks Alan. I pried off the cover and pulled the springs and tumblers and that didn't do it. But.........I figured it out. All you have to do is slide the spring back with your thumbnail and the whole rod ***embly slides right out! Duh!!

Great. It has been awhile since I had one of those door locks apart!

 

Misunderstood….

 

Compress the spring towards the 'lever'. Then the lever will slide out sideways thru the slot in the side. You will need to rotate the lever as it has a flat spot that you will need to line up with the slot to slide if off. Hope this helps.
