Not that I'm ready to paint my car by any means but I'm wondering when I'm ready what is the best way to strip down that old paint and rust? I figure a DA sander probably, or is there another way when going all the way to the metal? What about the inside, which has considerably more surface rust, would you use like a POR15 or something or try and sand it all too? Also what would you use for a good primer on that bare metal outside? I guess a better question is what products and order do the materials get applied in a paint job starting at the bare metal? I have read how-to's on a paint job over a paint job but nothing with baremetal. I'm not a body guy by any means (obviously) but when the time comes i'd like to bring my car up to a more professional level (read not ratrod), and being a very tight budget means I'll be attempting the paint myself. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=207520&d=1153619344 thanks for any info that points me in the right direction. Humm Im not the best person to tell you anything abt paint but I have painted two cars and they have came out looking good. One thing you might do is a sandblaster you can get them cheap, some you use with a five gallon bucket,A Da sander will work also you just dont want to scar up the metal alot,Body work I dont know alot abt,I know you might paint the spot a couple of times with what paint you have to see what it is going to look like before you paint the car.Primer I was told 3-4 coats then sand and end up with a fine wet sand paper.when I painted I did have a couple runs,I wet sanded and repainted and all was fine. One more thing car primer sands real easy not like the spray can stuff.Just take your time, you can do it I did.
hey thanks I have done some small painting projects (enamel), involving wet sanding, and at one time I did sand down and rattle can a truck I had. But the DA did bite into the metal. I thought about some type of media blasting. I have heard sand with warp the metal. I am not sure if you can use the walnut or whatever they use with a regular "speed blaster" gun the snapon sells or the knock off, or where you'd get the media. Professional media blasting would be nice but I haven't seen or heard of anybody remotely near doing it.
