Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 57ford/60thunderbird, Jul 8, 2013.

  1. well yesterday (sunday) was apretty decent day first day it hadn't rained in a week and there was a cruise in so I gonna go I decide with my girlfriends permission that im going to drive HER 50 Pontiac (the damn car hates me) so I get to the cruise meet up with some friends have afew laughs enjoy the sun .....soo far so good

I know a guy who has a disc brake set up from a 70's nova her Pontiac has a nova sub frame with drums she REALLY want discs so I call him from the cruise hes gonna be home and its not far from my house so I tell him ill be there in a little while I call her to tell her im gonna take her car to set up a deal for her disc brakes..... still good

so I get just about to his house nice flat straight open road 55mph speed limit ...nobody insight....so whats a gear head do ...I decide to open up the edelbrock 4bbl easily runs up to @95 let off bring back down to 55....still goo...d

I notice a slight viberation in the steering wheel ...I thinks it must be in the road .....erm.... then BANG thump thump thump thump ohhh **** NOW WHAT (everytime I take this damn car out something goes wrong)
I first I think balljoint broke...nope still have steering (doing 55 slowing down sound gets slower the slower I go get stopped make up my mind to get out and look .......

the driver side front tire sepreated blew about a 2 foot long section of tread loose on the tire you know how much damage a junk of rubber flying around can do?

the inner fender is ripped loose the fender it self which was attached to the inner fender is partially loose the paint has some scratches the FAKE lake pipe is only half attached now the wires for the turn signal torn loose yeah it could of been a lot worse like it could of let go at 95 instead of 55 .... not soo good now

call her tell her what happens shes not happy but just says well you know she (the Pontiac ) doesn't like you yeah yeah

get ahold of a tow truck (flatbed ) ill be out there in about an an hour and half .....really ok

soo while im waiting on the side of the road I snap a few pics here they are

I wonder if the tire would have separated if you had just maintained the speed limit in your borrowed car?...

how old are those tires you were doing 95 on? just curious as the brand name on the side looks older.

at least now you can get some better looking tires for her!

glad no one was hurt, cars can be fixed

Sure, it was a pisser. But yours is soooo easily fixed compaired to my 64. The lug bolts sheered off the rear axle and the wheel got jammed up into the wheelwell at speed! The car did a drift slide from the lane to the shoulder shooting a shower of sparks off of the backing plate, loosing all the drum brake **** in the process. You have to replace a tire and re-attach your lake pipe and secure your fender. Done deal. At least you got out of it easier than me!

Had a Malibu with a set of those Dunlaps on it. All four went bad, luckily didn't have the tread come off, but they were all separated and bulging.

After a google search, it appears those tires are speed rated at 118 mph. That plus old age probably isn't a good combination.

A sign that a separation is coming on is to inspect the along the outer rows of thread for uneven wear in spots, if you see an area that appears to be worn more than several inches past it that may indicate belt lift.A lot of people mis-read it as an alignment issue for some reason it is common that it will happen in tires from the same batch and can be caused by uneven temps in the curing mold.

  17. Could have been worse. You could have been busted for speeding with your licence in your jeans at home, spun off the road, piled into a row of choppers on the side of the road which were there to attend a fallen comrade's funeral. And then discover your slab of beer in the back has shattered all over the inside of the trunk and your address book which you keep in the trunk with all your other girlfriend's names has been spoilt by beer and then you remember that you forgot to get dressed properly that morning so you are standing in your underpants on the road and then it starts raining and then you realise you actually made a wrong turn and you're not even supposed to be driving down this street, and then...

I've never seen lakes pipes mounted like that, or did it just get knocked sideways from the blowout ?

  24. No wonder her car doesn't like you .
Of course the car has deep seated aggression tendencies towards you. Much like you have for it.

I would seek a the****** to help you, your girlfriend and her car work these issues out.

I don't think the car hates you. It's just trying to lose those lakes pipes.
