I try not to spend 5 dollar bills for a year and at the end of the year, hope all my Christmas shopping is payed for.... Then all the 5's are for my car stuff. Only problem is you gotta spend money to get the 5's for change to stash away. Dustin
Dave Ramsey. Yeah, it's tough at first, but do what this guy says and you won't have those problems anymore.
I have a friend that used to not be able to save money, if he had a nickel he had to spend it. He finally got to the point that he needed to save some money so he would give it to me to hold for him with the instructions that I give it back when he needed it for the intended use. I don't have a problem setting money aside for specific things so he knew the money would be there when he needed it, but he wouldn't get it for anything else......so, send me your money and I'll hold it for you....
I just opened a savings account at my bank ( state farm) and the fun part is the bank is mostly online ( no real buildings) and I have a automatic deduction , also I have a sheet that sits next tot he computer with my needs list for the car , and they are prioritized , like my wiring harness , well last week I found a deal too good to p*** up ( someone bought it for a Car project and found out it was harder than they thought to do it ) so I got it at half price , I am trying to get rid of stuff from the old O/T cars I used to build and that money goes into the fund I transfer what I earned in cash into the savings fom checking and use thecash for everyday items . also I learned to try not to want everything and say no to splurge expenditures , as for house items . well there is a general fund for that . and if needed the car sits and house stuff gets done .
Here's the Scott method. Get some envelopes. First one is the ***-saving emergency fund, "F-U-Money" to some. That's first before anything. Once there's some in there, you take what you can and spread the love through the envelopes. Mine right now are "Step van trans", "Road Runner fund", "48 Fund" and "Music fund", and "Taxes". All the ones go in the last one. You discipline yourself not to take any out unless it's life or death... but short of that, you forget it ever existed and keep 'em out of sight. They fill quicker than you think, especially if you sell off other **** and earmark 100% of it to one of the project envelopes, or sacrifice habits and ***ign the savings, etc.
i hid 2 grand under the floor mats of my pickup and my kids where cleaning out my pickup found it and gave it to the wife.
Now a daysWe save all of our change coins. It can add up pretty fast. My emergency fund is my cattle. Many folks say a half dozen head isnt worth messing with. However at over a $1.50 per pound a 700 lb weaning calf is quite a chuck of money. Did you know something alive is growing while your sleeping. It works 24 x7! Save your s****. That probably the best for car hobbiest. Save clean and seperate all of your recyclables. I reciently sold a small ford ranger Pk load of clean copper fin rads from air conditioners and clean alum wheels for $916.oo. With the internet you can find the best market s**** prices vary widely. My wife saves every $100 bill she gets her paws on. She sometimes will loan me some cash if she approves of what im buying. Now before the kids where grown & left home there wasnt any extra money. When the children where little we spent any extra on them doctors & dentist clothes toys utilitys grocerys allowances ect ate money. Back then We didnt even own a milk cow. We had two milk goats. We learned to start a second bank account and when we cashed a check we deposited 10% of every dollar we recieved. The last resort savings of money we have are the trees growing on our place. We could always sell the timber. OldWolf
When I was still working, my overtime money was put into a special account which I never touched unless it was for car stuff. Now my tax refunds, if any, go into that account until the house is paid off.
I divorced mine so I wouldn't have to lie to her any more. I'm a firm believer in doing the right thing.
basically would make the project gradually, to get money and time, some good friends to exchange parts...
I put mine in a compartment in my billfold. I can sit on it forever and not spend it. I do sometimes borrow from it if a need comes up, but as soon as possible, I repay myself. I have carried $400-$500 around like that for a year or longer, only bad thing is if you ever get robbed or lose your billfold, it's all gone. I have a friend that got robbed one night, he had about $2000 stashed like that. He told the thug he wanted to keep his wallet, he had sentimental reasons to it, took out what cash he had in the normal place and threw it on the ground and ran like hell, hearing the click click click of a empty 9mm behind him!
Don't hide it. you will forget where you put it. That's what happened to me. I made the mistake of hiding it when I was drunk. had to wait til I got drunk again, then remembered where I put it. Funny how that works.
If you can't trust yourself, who the hell can you trust ? I can see hiding it from the old lady, from the kids, so the dog can't eat it, keep it safe from fire, under the radar - but hiding it from yourself ????
When it's raining you can't repair it and when it's not raining it doesn't leak. You're covered dude, now go get that dropped axle!!! Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
This whole thread does seem kind of childish doesn't it. I've got a ripe IRA just sitting in the bank, but I'm saving that for my funeral. Damn, are they ever going to have a party when I go.
I have a cast iron piggy bank; rather large, and holds a lot of loot. I often forget I've put money inside him. He just sits on the mantle, and stares back with his inscrutable smile. And, yeah, I do a Dillinger on him every once in a while; I get out the screw driver, and rob him. He was cast in two pieces in Florence. It's always painful to take him apart, so it has be something important. Otherwise, I feed him coins and bills, just to keep him happy.
