The whole silver ring pops off.It might be kind of tight.

  3. Put your hand on the center hub.

Push down to compress the retaining spring.
(Might want to disconnect the horns or battery prior to on the horn will be honking until you get the hub off.)

Push the hub down all the way so the hub is flat and not ****ed.

Turn CCW about 50-70 degrees which will align the hub tabs with
notches in the wheel's steel center cup.
(I'm pretty sure CCW is the right way, if not go CW. Main thing is don't be pushing or pulling on the cast ring or you'll break it. You can use the ring to turn the horn hub/ring combo, but do it with reasonable force.)

Once you have the horn wire/terminal disconnceted, removal of the wheel proper rquires a regular steering wheel puller.
for the initial wheel pull, have the wheel/shaft nut at the top of the shaft threads.

If you don't, the puller will spread the wheel shaft and you can't get the nut back on without some filing and many bad words.

Used to own a Shoebox or two....

  4. Just out of curiosity, is your custom wheel's cross spokes in the form of a shallow X and covered with ivory colored plastic?

If so, it may be a factory made optional at the parts counter wheel.
It may have been made for the Crestliners and came standard on them.

Key thing is, it's a desirable wheel.

Why not post some pics of it?
If you're not gonna use it, some other Shoebox owner may want it.

you should be able to pick up a puller for less than $20 at any napa, autoquest, etc.... Leslie makes a decent one. Good tool to have, you won't use it much but when you need it....

thats an accessory ford wheel from the early 50s, those and the crestliner wheels are going for north of $1000 IF you can find one!

There should be a wire running up the inside of the steering column for the horn ****on. It comes out of the steering box at the bottom.

I think you'll find a single screw in the horn ****on; a wire with loop terminal connects there and goes down the middle of the steering shaft. It connects to the gronding terminal of a relay...another topic when you get there...
