How to patina a new alternator

What is the best way to make a new alternator look old? Someone told me to use over cleaner?????Any suggestions?

 

Take the guts out and put them in an old case!

 

Trade it for a generator ???

 

leave it outside on the workbench under the eves. mine got the finish in 2 weeks. didn't want it, but oh well

A quick search for threads with patina in the title pulled up 3 pages, several are closed. Many if not all of them have the info you seek

 

Is it aluminum and not painted? Even if you put it on your engine fresh and new it will not look new very long. Or as has been said just leave it outside for a bit. its fall take it out in the yard and burry it in wet leaves, they will stain it real quick, like in a couple of days.

 

Wash machine & dry on line . Works everytime .

 

Beat me to it.

 

Take an oxy acetylene torch and light the flame with acetylene only. Then generously blacken the case.

Then take a large hammer and vigrously beat marks and small dents into the case.

Then spray the whole works down with easy off oven cleaner and let it sit for several days.

Then hose it off with lots of water and dry using old dirty shop rags.

From this I suppose you can get the drift on my opinion when it comes to "patina"

 

I'm with "Blue One". Why are you getting all caught up in the 'patina' of an alternator? Patina connotes age...if it's NEW - install it - the age will accrue in due time. Do you 'patina' your tires? I get SOOOOO tired of this patina silliness. Painting cars/trucks and then spending time sanding it so it looks old. How phoney is that? Do you 25yr-olds put grey IN your hair? Do you wrinkle your skin on purpose? That's patina. Quit jumping on the bandwagon of every flash-in-the-pan fad that comes along, gee whiz.

 

I don't try to hide my chit I just run it and let the chips fall where they may.

I did run some dummy wires from a one wire once to an old burnt out regulater to see how many people would notice that it was a one wire and not an externally regulated atlernator.

Yep..Easy Off oven cleaner works great on aluminum.....makes it look old and nasty in no time

I'm with propwash, if you want old, buy old. Otherwise your fake. Sorry I mean your a poser.

 

An easy way is to position your radiator overflow hose over the alternator,
run the car nice and hot.
You want to boil it over and really suck out the grime in the block.
If you're lucky the coolant is nice and brown,
this leaves the most realistic patina.

Hopefully you have a lifetime warranty at O-reilly so the gift just keeps giving!

Dollar store oven cleaner will stain anything if you leave it on there.... I thought it would be awesome to just spray on a old junk motor to clean up but then my ADD kicked in and i had some real patina real quick even on a brand new holley carb....
