    (Your results may vary.)

Plus it's hard to steer off the course with so much caster.

The tire change would lower the effective gear ratio quite a bit.

They swapped the front short wheels & tires for the back's taller wheels and tires. This change improved the usability of the rear ends gearing.

I pick up a second for every 10 years since I last raced in the 70’s. My then 17 sec car now ran in the 12’s

It's like John Daly's advice on how to drive the ball farther, tee it up at a slight angle.

    "So what were your times?"
As I remember, we had good times back then.
The sedan went from 18 to 17 with the powerful Buick V-6.

(My licensed Street Roadster was my race car -- 210 plus at Bonneville.)

    Two things are happening here.
The first - as - kevinrevin pointed out is the smaller tires on the rear give a better effective gear ratio to enable the engine to rev quicker. On my avatar car I switched from a 12 x 32 slick to a 10.5 x 28 rear slick and picked up .05 in the sixty foot and .10 in the eighth.

The second thing is the larger tires on the front gives you a greater roll-out on the starting line beams which are 3 inches off the asphalt.
The car is staged when the front leading edge of the front tire breaks the staged beam.
The timer starts when the rear trailing edge or the front tire clears the stage beam.
The more distance there is between the leading edge and the trailing edge the greater "running start" you get at starting the clocks. A bigger front tire yields a bigger running start.

    I got ya.
I Ran some very short sidewall dirt track tires - softest compound I could find with 3.42 gear, until I could swap to 4.11.

Id like to see the et slips to. If there is a typical clapped out 305 from a 78 chev van under the hood than yes a second could be picked up. Anything with more power would be up in smoke.

It was a quarter mile 30 years ago. You know, real drag racing -- 1320 feet. It was for fun -- you remember that? Roll in, what? I grew up watching the guy with the flag. At Colton we could give him a 6-pack and he would raise the flag when we left. It's not a fucking drag racing car. It was made as a joke. And it was fun. Remember, fun?
