I'm trying to figure out how to mount a '50 merc flathead in a '34 frame. I have switched to the '48 to '51 trunk pumps and lower pulley , but can't seem to get the motor to fit down to the stock mounting holes with out moving the motor 3 to 4 inches towards the firewall, the only way to get the motor in the stock location is to move the mounts up about 1 to 2 inches above the frame rail and that seems to through everything else out of whack. What am i missing?, thanks

You are missing the fact that the engine is much olonger than the original. The 33/34 is the smallest engine bay there was for v8s. I raised my Merc engine up to clear the crossmember. Then shimmed the tranny for alignment. Yes it throws a few things out of whack. Also you will have very little room for a fan.
Other option is to put and early cam and use the early timing cover etc.

The late motor isn’t longer ….. Just the stuff on the front / water pumps to clear the 49 up distributor.

Look at this …. Late dist with early pumps

Early / short pumps fit the late motor by pluging holes in block
Allowing you to run early generator - fan - crank pulley ………………… in early car. Just need to mount a idler pulley to get the belt past the distributor.

Here is a pic of the way I mounted the engine in my 34 pickup. Sorry, not too detailed but the only one I've got of it.

I used a piece of suare tubing and hung it off the frame rail. Been there for 7 years and everything is OK.

  6. Slot the holes in the water pumps to get it down.
