If you've seen any of my other posts, you know I've got a 60 cadillac sedan. I've got front and rear coil springs with standard shocks. I'm about to tow a HUGE camper trailer to NC from Illinois. I'm in a bad way here. I need to jack up the rump of the caddy, cheaply, and have it done like yesterday. I've got a place that can put in adjustable air shocks tomorrow, but they want like 300 bucks. That seems awful high to me. I used to put rubber spacers in the springs of my old buick, to raise the ride height. I've also seen steel adjustable spacers to shove inbetween the springs. Anybody have any ideas as to how to jack the rear end up so the trailer's not sitting on the ground. They need to be Cheap, Fast, and Easy. Hmm.. noticing a trend...
I've tried those rubber ones, they look like a fat X shape. I had my 80s caprice FULL at the time, trunk full of books and tools, rear seat full of alot of other shit. They didn't really help that much, and I lost one on the bumpity bumps on I-80 in PA somewhere. I heard a thump and looked in the mirror to see it rocketing off the side of the highway. Nice distance, though.
If the camper is that big, you are going to use an equalizer hitch, correct? You can adjust the ride height with the hitch, and adjusting the torsion bars. Reese, maker of hitches, drove a Toronado towing a trailer all over the country without any rear wheels on the car to demo the hitch system. When you have the hitch installed, they will show you how to adjust it. Mutt
$300 doesn't sound that high for parts and labor. Personally I think I'd be lookin for an easy lift hitch instead of messing with springs. Just my 2 cents worth. The Wizzard
you should be able to go and get a set of air shocks yourself and have 'em on in an afternoon for less than $100. just run a standard fill dump line to them and put the air to 'em. then you can get fancy when time allows and plum a compressor to them and have adjustability. where in nc you bringing a camper? i'm in nc and have a '66 deville pull behind(forget the footage but it's a smaller one) that i'm about to sell i think. you can buy them fairly cheap here. don't know why...ken....
Well, I wanted 2 let yall know. I spent 250 on gettin a great hitch installed. Good custom weld job, welded to 6 points on the frame. Looks great and is VERY strong. As for the rear ride height. I still haven't done anything. I found the adjustable air shocks for 129 a piece, un-installed. But I'm still looking for something cheaper. I don't think I'll change the springs as I like the ride height pretty much as is, and don't plan on going to airbags any time soon. As for the leveling hitch? I'm not sure what u speak of. I'll have to do some searching. Sounds interesting.
Oh.. and as to where i'm headed. Wilmington. And my trailer was a flop. Wife took one look @ it and said HELL NO. So.. @ least I'll be ready for a boat/camper/junk hauler trailer in the future. I love havin a hitch on a caddy.. specially a 2x2 BIG hitch welded to the frame. Looks rather redneck if ya know what I mean. I dig it.
Dude, listen to me. Go with a set of rising blocks. You can get them in solid steel or aluminumin height variations of 2"-6". I am also into 4x4 so trust me on this one. Go to like the nearest parst store and you will find them with a set of U-bolts for that size lift. Hope I got this to you in time.
129 dollars a piece for air shocks. I got my gabriel hi-jackers for about 70 bucks a piece from pep boys. I no longer run them, but they are easy to install. and they should come with the air line all you need to do is drill a hole in the trunk floor to put the air valve and run the line its easy.
Dude, Studedude. Listen to me. 60 Cadillacs dont have leaf spring rear suspension. Coils man. And if it did have leafs the blocks would lower the car because the axle is on top of the springs, therefore the blocks would push the axle up into the frame thus lowering the hieght of the car. SLAMIT
