Today, on my "64 long stepside, I used 36 grit on a 9 1/2" pro sanding board to remove the epoxy garage floor speckle paint with poor results. I tried a 4" x 1" wire wheel and a 2 1/2 " wire wheel on the inside's bottom angle iron with some progress. The PO thought it was a terrific idea to coat the sides of the bed's interior with this coating. I want to repaint the interiors sides wiith satin black and don't want the texture of the garage floor speckle paint obvious. I prefer not using aircraft stripper. Done it in the past, but what a messy ordeal...rags, putty knife, seams to protect, etc. This epoxy floor paint is some tuff stuff! Open to any ideas. My last option will be to bed liner spray it, only if nothing else works. See pix

i'd try a propane torch and putty knife

  7. um you can give me the pickup since you dont like it and then find a different one without the "bed liner"...

but really i would think a wire wheel, a few cold ones, and couple hours is gona be the best. i put that stuff on the floor of my garage...its pretty good.

    ...media blasting?????

Sounds like a good testimonial for the floor paint -- contact the manufacturer, they'll put your bed in an ad and pay you for it !!

I wonder if soda blasting would remove it?

I second calling the manufacturer. Tell them "This is a real good product, would last for years. Now how do I remove it".

Thanks for your idea. It would work better if the metal sides were heavier gauge. I used a propane torch and putty knife. Tried to keep the heat down until the epoxy coating would s****e off. Did an area about 8" x 8" and it caused a minor warp (1/32") in the metal side from top to bottom not left to right. I may try again tomorrow morning on the other side in the same location to see if I can control the heat better. Maybe an industrial heat gun would be better. I'll give my 1000 watt hair dryer a try at it too.

I think it's going to be tough to remove without damaging the box. We had our warehouse floor recoated with epoxy and the old epoxy was roughed up using a floor sander with diamond cutters. It's tough ****.
I think your best bet is to go with the spray in liner to cover it. Sorry to be a downer.

I'm thinking the heat might take the paint on the outside of the bed off also IMO

Well, you don't want to use stripper but that's what it's gonna take to do the job. HRP

Brake fluid took up the epoxy on my buddy's floor

  19. look up a product called "peel away" its made for removing paint and epoxy you roll it on heavy and apply the cheese cloth type product that comes with it wait a bit and peel it off , the other option we use at the boat yard is a product by Jasco its called paint and epoxy remover there again its a stripper (not of the fun, ***y kind) but it works well, can be messy but it works

An industrial heat gun will work better than the propane torch. If you warm up the coating and get it to start to peel, you should be able to keep the edge warm and work it off. I have a business coating floors, and all the epoxy failures we see are usually due to heat, like hot tires or south facing sun exposure. I use a steel shot blaster( much more agressive than sand blasting ( will eat 1/2" into concrete in 2 seconds if we stop moving) and it only roughs up the surface. I doubt that you will be able to blast it off without warping the **** out of those panels. If the heat gun doesn't cut it, I would recommend lining over it

soda blasting won't even touch it....gl*** or sand blasting will take it off.

Try a very sharp, wide wood chisel with the ends rounded off a just a little.
Use quick long strokes. Resharpen as necc.

Glad to hear it sticks to something, not worth a **** on garage floors.

Hope you can get it off your pickup bed.

  24. I was in a car shop a few years ago where they were epoxy coating half the shop.
A few days later I came back to the shop to find they were sandblasting the freshly painted side....they forgot to put in the safety beads......what a mess....
Chemicals, s****ing and wire wheeling won't work...I would think soda blasting would be a way to clean it, not remove it.....

If you have the time I think I would remove the bed and lay each surface horizontal, flat and do them one at a time with aircraft stripper. Check to make sure the stripper will move the epoxy first.

Another thought might be to re-skin the inside of the bed with new panels ie; aluminumn, wood, metal, rubber mat or maybe upholstery.

All makes respraying sound pretty good!!

a good trick i use on stubborn paint with stripper is apply stripper than cover tight with garbage bag seals in chemicals alowing them to work before they evaporate. sorry you warped your panel didn't know your metal was so thin

In my first post it was mentioned the orig owner coated the bed sides with the epoxy floor coating, not me.

The plan now is to sand all the sprinkle nubs down to a fine texture, roll on some primer, and then roll on some black enamel. Reason for doing this is next week the oak bed kit from MAR-K will arrive. I want to get the bed completely done so I can proceed with painting the roof white, and the body hugger orange.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.
