I would like to run a burnout contest as a fundraiser for a couple of local rural fire departments. There are many events run around the country, but I have found no information on how to run them safely, or common rules and procedures for staging a burnout contest. Any information anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Rent K- Rail barriers from united rentals and build a safezone. I have seen cars that were chained to a concrete pad before but that really kills it for the fun factor. Lay down some strict ground rules (no donuts) and such so itdoesnt get out of hand.

Oh and try and use a place that has concrete instead of asphalt so that there is less damage to the ground that you may be responsible for repairing.

there's always a ton of burnouts hanging out around my bar, and downtown. i'd be glad to round them all up and drop them off. you don't have to tell me who won the contest.

Our local race track had a burnout contest worked good. My tires were alittle worse for ware thou. But it stayed safe for spectators.

  12. I've been running burnout contests here in Arizona for a few years now. The crowd loves them.
First, I had a meeting with the chief of police and then the city manager in charge of the streets. In the discussion, I was able to let them allow me to do it.

he is how I set mine up.
    1. The burn outs are static burnouts. Then are allowed to roll through 2 car lengths then must shut off or their effort is aborted. I have barricades a fw lengths in front of the car for safety and to keep them from going too far.
    2. I have the fire dept right there. They even water down the area for the rear tires with their truck for me.
    3. no one is allowed in front of the car except myself as I am in charge.

    4. not sure the best way to judge it, the first time I had the crowd judge it by applause. That did not work the best because one guy had a lot of friends and won even though he should havebeen in second IMO. I awarded it to him anyway because I had set the rules.

5, the following years, I came up with a much better way to run and judge the contest.

6..I had 5 or 6 judges who were not allowed to speak with each other ( to compare) during the portion of the event. One was a police officer.
Then I had a meeting with all of them together to explain the criteria. I gave them each a clipboard with a pen. On the clip board was their ballot.
I decided that they should judge based on 4 catagories 1-10 with 10 the highest.
    They voted on
    a. duration of burnout in seconds
b the 'visuals' how good the car and smoke looked while doing it
c the 'sounds' how good the car sounded while doing it
d crowd reaction- how well each car was received

after the portion of the event, I took the ballots and adding up each one and the winner was the one with the higherst score.

It worked out quite well and was very fair.

the only potential thing that is unfair is the first guy doing it does not know how long the others will last. To make the order of cars doing the burnouts be fair. The contestants drew a number out of a hat.

we'll be doing more this year too. The crowd loves it.

    hope this helps you.

I put on a show one year and did it in a town owned rec park.. Pretty much like Mr Applecrate did. I made everyone sign a release and the town made sure everything was convered by their ins. Worked out fine.

Great avatar man! Thank you for your informative reply.although I also enjoyed the dump the clutch one!Did you have any significant pavement wear? The fire dept will be there, should we wet down the spot for each person? There will probably be some spontaneous wet spots. The water should reduce the pavement wear. Would the metal plates be too slick? I have also heard of a 5 or 10 second time limit

The biggest problem in a burn out contest is finding anyone stupid enough to participate.

Around here they burn them till they blow! Some places use steel plates. The local race track once had a guy enter with a school bus. He burned them till they blew out on the front stretch

    Hahahahahahahah !

  21. Probably wise to have a tow truck on standby too, if just to clear cars that do burn the tires off completely.

  22. This just about says it all.

  23. Im thinking this aint real trad, although chirpin the tyres is a hot rod thing.
If you want to see how its really done, check out "Modified car forums" on u tube. The Aussies have it well sorted, and id go out on a limb and say, they are the best at it.

I really do agree. It amazes me the guy with big $$s in his ride hammering the s**t out of it, Or the guy with the shoe string budget doing the same thing. I was never one for spinning tires. Always thought it was better to go fast. Same with muffler rapping. But the general public thinks that is all the hot rodder builds his car for. And it is somehow satisfying watching Mr. $$s car break. Especially a week later when he isn't doing anything wrong!:D

When I did My shows here at My Gas Station in Boron I always had a burn-out contest, the first one We did right down the main drag on the street,(I was the 1st guy to go and even went twice, just seeing Me go opened the flood gates, in the years after the burn-outs were in the gas lane of the closed Station across the street from Me), My 1st thought was gonna be who could lay down the longest patch, but it soon turned into a smoke contest, and by the time a 49 Chevy pick-up was doing donuts( while people were trying to drive down the main drag) I realized things were out of control, We even had a few near misses with parked cars when people got a little out of shape but stayed in the throttle trying to straighten it out, so by all means set up an area with barriers ( I used piles of old tires to define the burn-out area after that 1st year, after all I had lots of old take offs from My tire shop), but the crowd would always like it when someone( most of the time Clyde Small of the Lordsmen) would smok'em till they blew up, one thing is for sure burn-outs can be a hoot, have fun. 26. The Aussies build dedicated burnout cars, but its more of a street machine thing.

  27. Yeah, look up Street Machine Summer Nats, the burnout contest there is........well................you just gotta see it to understand. Garry Myers with his 100K+ Mustang has been king for years and he still wins shows with the car.
They are stupid when not run right and dangerous!

    Doc.
