    Reality check here, gun-toters:

I'd damn sure put a hurtin' on anyone I caught stealing out of my garage. But when it comes right down to it, there's nothing in there worth a man's life. Save your bullets for the one who comes into your home & threatens your family's security. The way I see it, if you're gonna use a gun on someone, you need to shoot to kill- & killing someone over tools is silly.

See, I got my own system all worked out.

I have this baboon, see, a big one. He probably weighs about 210, a good sized baboon. He hasn't seen a girly baboon in years.

He is ill-tempered and horny. He just hangs out in the shop, eating bananas all day. It is a bit sketchy hanging out with him, but I give him the bananas so we're cool. He is a slob though, and throws his banana peels all over the floor.

So, the way I got it figured - if somebody breaks in, they are bound to slip on a banana peel and wake up my mean, horny old baboon. After that, nature takes it's course...

The theif made that call when he decided to try and steal YEARS of my life of earning those tools. If the court system would do squat to theives, less would do it. If he is CAUGHT doing it, and the penalty was cutting off a hand, I would be a lot less likely to fire. But I'm sorry, "probation" isn't quite enough justice for me.

A friend of mine worked at a new car dealer, shop was broken into one night. His was the only toolbox left. He had the top and bottom boxes bolted together. His box also just happened to be against a pole/support in the building, so it was chained to that and against the wall, so you could only get to the chain by opening the toolbox and removing the drawer in the way. They probably could have got it if they really wanted, but it would have really slowed them down, so they just cleared the rest. :(

A good cheap ALARM for your shop is..........get a motion sensor light or just a replacement sensor..........wire in a LOUD alarm........put a switch where YOU know where it is..........any time anyone passes in frount of it, it goes off and stays on for how long the LIGHTS were supose to stay on........most sensors also have a adj. sensitivity switch on them..........and if you want to keep the lights you can also put a flasher on them.......they make a flat flasher that fits between the bulb and the socket so no extra wires are needed.......(also make a good joke in a buddys drop light or shop light........)..........

I've got nearly the same setup as Flathead Youngin' - ADT alarm and a 12-ga pump shotgun... Going to have to try S.R.I.'s solution... metal building should conduct real well :D

Heres a thought. If the thief is there, your life and the lives of your family are at risk. I dont care about my tools enough to kill for them, but iether did my dad. hen he went into the shop to scare the theives off they put 3 rounds into his head. If he would have been a little more like S.R.I, I would have a granpa for my son, instead all I got is his memories.

I paid the Snap-On man 100 bucks a week for years and years. I used those tools to put food on my kid's plates.

They touch my tools, they threaten my wife and 2 little girls eating. I'm killing them. Every time, no qualms about it.

Sorry about the loss of your dad. I said the tools aren't worth someones life. It was your dad who was threatened in his case, so I wish he could have popped a couple rounds into them 1st. And the fact that there was more than one would have certainly justified his actions.

I'm not a gun control activist or anything of the sort- I heartily agree that you should protect your personal property w/ whatever force you deem necessary. But personally, I think shooting someone over replaceable objects is silly & represents a deeper emotional problem. When it comes right down to it, go in armed & ask them to stay still 'til the cops arrive. If they come at you, then feel free to shoot. :D

  14. Just yesterday there was an episode of "It Takes a Thief" on the Discovery Channel that featured the "burglary" of an auto repair shop. Might be worth checking your re-runs for it.

I agree that the things they steal is not worth there life and that is what they need to understand when they step foot on my property. I have signs that state what will be in store for them if they trespass on my place , plain and simple. The last thing I want to do is kill someone but if they disregard the warning it is there own fault. I live in a rural area and if you break in you are threatening my family and my way of making a living. I work hard for all I have and if they want the same they can work for it and quit being a methhead. This is a big problem in this area with Meth taking over our community.Sorry for the rant but I have had problems with this at my old home . We knew who was doing it [happened to be the wifes sorry cousin], told the cops they did nothing, finally I had enough and confronted him ,went to his house and my stuff was there in plain view. He told me that he did take the stuff and I could go "f" off. I took my tire tool and broke his collar bone , jaw and several of his fingers for stealing my crap and I got in trouble for it[my own fault].I am usually a very calm guy. I think it would have been best for him not to steal from me again but he did. Endless cycle of the police not being to do anything about it even when he had my stuff. Finally I built a fence around my place and another around my shop, two german shepards at the shop and two at my house ,more lighting , rebar around the outside walls of the shop, heavy steel doors , heavy duty locks etc and I had no more problems. Cost me alot but unfortunitely the crap is just getting out of control here.Just 15 years ago I could leave the keys in my truck, doors and windows open at my house all day with no worries , not so anymore.I know I am not the only one who has had this problem ,it is good to here some of your security ideas , I may use some of them soon, thanks.:)

When this subject comes up; I always wonder WHY people put WINDOWS in their home shops? It's a way to see in and "show off your belongings!" Glass can be broken.

In addition to ALL of the above; I also leave a RADIO ON, ALL the time. (along with a light that shines through the cracks in the overhead door) That way anyone "skulking" around the neighbourhood will think somebody is in the shop pulling an "all nighter!"

Because I have become even more parinoid, I put together a system of micro swiches on ALL the doors with a series of LED's that I can see from in the house. (detached garage) If a door (overhead, radio controled) is left slightly open and the power isn't off, (power switch with indicator lamp beside the man door) I will have a RED lamp showing towards the house. I can't get a GREEN until the shop overhead door is CLOSED AND the power to the door operator is OFF! (this applies to two overhead doors)

Several motion sensor controlled lights set off about 2000 watts of light around the shop at night. Another motion sensor will set off a buzzer in the house if someone climbs over the fence (8 feet high!) into the yard.

There is no such thing as a 175lb german shephard.
The average shephard weighs less than 60lb.

Who is "gonna replace them? You? The guy who stole them? The police? My neighbors? Most homeowners insurance will NOT replace tooling if "they deem you are using them for more then personal use". In other words if they THINK you are making money with them you get NADA. I do have a comercial shop, HOWEVER, some items (my cnc plasma, my english wheel, a few mills/lathes) are at home. I highly doubt Allstate is going to think my CNC plasma is for "personal use". Chances are they cant take the whole thing, but if they walk out with the head unit,,,,,$4k+. I don't have $4k+ extra laying around so some guy can buy his fix of meth. Do I go out looking for theives to shoot? NO. But if they want to come steal YEARS of my life, my income to support/feed my family, do I think some POS life is worth my tools? In a heartbeat. He made the call to risk it. We are not talking about somone walking up to my door and dropping of a package. We are talking about a worthless piece of shit in society that preys on the helplessness of others. Might be your moms house next time. Maybe he just wants her jewlery, but what if it doesn't go smooth?

Agreed, on Ryan. Doesn't make me happy to live in a world that I HAVE to be put in a situation when all I was doing was minding my own business, like a good boy.
