Technical How to tell a Ford 223 from a 262 - and BTW, anyone got a 262 they don't need?

    Hello!

    I'm looking at a '63 Ford F100 that's in fairly nice shape but for a blown engine (rod through the block, non-repairable). It has what I'm pretty sure is a 223, which, from what I've read on here, is a good, reliable motor, but NOT a powerhouse. It seems that a 262 would be a bolt in replacement, and would allow me to get the truck somewhere up to highway speeds.

    From the outside, how can I tell a 262 from a 223?

    If anyone reading this has a complete 262, preferably running, I'd be interested in it. Unless you're local, you'd have to be willing to ship it, unless I can set up a relay.

  2. The 262 usually has the dipstick in the oil pan. And often the fan is mounted on a bracket above the water pump. I installed a 262 from a truck into my 55 ford ranch wagon. The 262 had a 11 inch clutch & flywheel ***embly.

    Searched Craig's List. Found a 223, but no 262 :(.

    262 has an extra casting "rib" above the dipstick on the side of the block. Fuel pump is mounted on the timing cover instead of the block, Oil filler is in the center of the valve cover instead of the front.
    They are a real powerhouse compared to the 223

    Look in 1964 and earlier F-250 up Ford trucks, school busses, industrial engine sources.......

    I expect there are some out there, but doubt they are plentiful........

    A '65 up 300 six would be much easier to find and is a better engine in many ways. The 240/300 engines have SBF 6 bolt bell housing/block pattern and will accept a variety of transmissions........but the sixes are neutral balance and V8 flywheels/flexplates are either 28 or 50oz. so you need a suitable flywheel/flexplate.

    RMR - Thanks for the info. Based on the pics of the truck I'm looking it, it's a 262. The truck is an F100, but it's a long bed with a HD 4 speed, and the filler hole is in the middle of the valve cover, so chances of it being a 262 are good.

    I emailed the guy that posted the ad, no response. He probably thinks I'm a scammer, although my written English is MUCH better than any scammer...
