the way you have to mount them in a lathe, you can't get to the backside to machine them. also there would be a problem with chatter.

i have not had any problems. bias ply tires normally are thin,so it works fine.

Great job ,Im glad my dad widened the set he gave me for his 32 ,You will get a kick out of this ,They didn't have sawzall's back then, So he drilled 500 holes each rim to split and then Installed 2 inches ,Making them 16 x6

  6. Great thread, good job on the wheels. I've got a brake lathe, I think I can cut them on that. I vote for you for the tech week winner!

    Nice work! Very impressive.
I have a set of dualies on my truck that were done with a rolled steel center. Everyone loves em but the guys at the tire shop who have to mount two tires on one rim..

  9. Ahso. Thanks. I love your truck by the way. If mine turns out 1/2 as nice as yours, I'll be happy.

Just checked the Hobby car Tech manual. (The New Zealand code of compliance of Rod building)
According to section 12:10 you can widen a wheel having a diameter of greater than 10" by a max of 3"

Thanks for the Tech post I'm about to widen a pair of Mopar 16" artillary rims for my pickup.

I was pushing all the tech week threads back to the top. yours happened to be the 24th one I did. They all deserved to be on the front page.

Nice work. Another example of why the HAMB is the best.

    Super cool.

Could the split be done without a lathe? (for those without access)

Maybe by placing the wheel on a flat surface, scribing a line, and carefully splitting with a cutoff wheel?

you could do it that way, but you would need to be perfect with your cut.

  22. I know Revhead asked about the same, but doesn't the tyre wanna go to the valley of the wheel, the outside in this case and push the tyre out of the rim on that side ? (sorry if the English isn't correct)

these are like alot of other wheels that have the drop down center off to one side further.
