When I finished my `38 Buick, the only thing left was the dash. It was origonally woodgrained, but when I got the car it had been painted red. Here are some pictures of how we woodgrained it. We used a woodgraining kit from Grain it technologies http://woodgraining.com/. It has comes with a lithograph plate and a roller to transfer the pattern onto the dash. the voids have to be drawn in with a brush. Thanks to my friends Mike and Richard Beggs for doing this for me.
Great Job! Nothing beats the look of original style woodgrain dashes. It really isn't all that hard to woodgrain a dash but most people think otherwise. .
Yes - more details - I'm facing a similar amount of work ahead of me on my '49, and knowing how somebody else did it right helps!!!
Very nicely done and great pics to go with it. Was trying to recall when woodgraining stopped?? I recall a few early 50's (51-52) Mopar products still with woodgrained dashs, I wonder if there was any later than that. Thanks for the website info. also. Michael
For those of you who want more details about how we did it, here it is. First we stripped and primed the dash. Then a base color, a pale yellow, was applied. It doesn`t show up in the pictures, but it was a pale yellow. I would have thought it would have been a brown or at least a beige color, but Mike works in the furniture industry and does this for a living so he knows what to do. Next, the pattern was applied with a roller. This is where real skill is needed. A lithographed plate with the desired pattern is inked and a gel roller (supplied with the woodgrain kit) was rolled on the plate to pick up the ink. The roller was used carefully to apply the ink to the dash, and the voids were painted in to match the grain. Then after the ink had dried, a stain was put on and when dry, clear was sprayed over it and the job was completed. It sounds easy when you say it fast, but it wasn`t. That`s why I let my friends do it. I wish I had taken more pictures of the woodgraining process, but to see how the pros do it, look at; http://woodgraining.com/ videos. If you are a Buick guy, go to my website http://mccainautomotive.com/ and click on the picture of the Buick to see how I made sidemount fenders for it. For a close up of the woodgrain we did on the woody, click on that picture to see details of that car.
I have some videos here.. http://www.youtube.com/user/JdeeRat Jdee Worked on a 40 Buick this weekend. It should look like this when done. Did this one last year...
i just got my kit from jdee, not only did he save me some money but threw in some extra goodies in there and didnt charge extra to exchange 2 plates for one big one. also kept in touch and got me the paint code for the chromabase paint id need. defenitely made sure i was happy with my buy and that i used it right. again thanks jdee, I O U 1
www.mad-coatings.com did all the garnish moldings and dash in my 46 Olds down here in Australia. Excellent work using new fang dangled technology. The new chrome needs a clean up though to remove the accumulated dust from sitting in the wardrobe.
We have a local guy that does the water/vacuum forming process. http://www.splashgraphicswtp.com/index.asp
How do you do around the gauges? I have a 41 buick and mine is coming off and i always wondered how it was done? Thanks
