I'm gathering pieces to put together my Henry J and I just can't put an automatic in it. I've always run 4 speeds, the occasional 3 speed, and now a Tremec in my Camino. This car is destined to be a bruiser, mostly strip time and while I know an auto is more consistent, I just can't do it. There's nothing like dumping the clutch and rowing gears. I've always been a Chevy kind of guy, but I've heard good things over the years about Ford toploader tranmissions, and I guess the Mopar guys have a pretty stout one they use behind Hemis. I don't currently know any Mopar guys, but all the Ford guys seem to be around me these days. My engine is a BB Chevy 427, expected power 550-600 with a dyno sheet to prove it in a few weeks, car under 2500 lbs and probably 12" slicks. I need a transmission that will hold up to the abuse of 7K clutch drops. I've built enough Muncies to know that they're out of the game. I'm aware of Jericos, but they're kinda spendy. I wouldn't complain at a Doug Nash either, but I don't expect to find one in the corner of somebody's garage. Devin
With that kind of horsepower, you will probably want a "big input" unit, 1 3/8 10 spline, but as I remember they are are all close ratio with a 2.33 first gear. We used to send the wide ratio 2.78 input shaft to Doug Nash, he would install the close ratio gear on the wide ratio input. 29 AVEE8 is right David Kee is the guru!
David Kee's site has great info if you have a tag on it to I.D. It but without a tag how can they be visually identified? I'm looking to scrounge one out of the corner of somebody's garage Thanks Devin Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
+1 on the big input toploader... you can find these at swaps pretty often, and are strong.... I run a small behind my 500hp OT car and have yet to have an issue...FWIW Tom
