Hot Rods How well does a stock 51 239 flat head work with the Ford AOD?

Does it have enough to perform ok with the AOD. Not sure what the rear is, have been told it is 8.8 Ford but do not know gear ratio. Owner estimates 2000 rpm at 60.

  2. Common ratio for that rear is 3:73. It was meant to work with OD.If you find its loafing on the highway you can put 4:11"s in to get the revs back up.Back in the day they put two speed Columbia rearends in flat head cars so I would think a OD would work too.

Does the 239 have enough grunt to perform ok with the AOD. I suspect automatics are not super efficient and am concerned about the low hp/torque being an issue.

  4. A guy I know put a C4 behind a flathead and regretted it. Said if he had it to do over he'd use a T5 manual instead.

I'm thinking there isn't much getting around the fact that any flathead with an automatic behind it is going to be a bit of a slug in comparison to an identical engine with a manual behind it. It all depends on your needs for an automatic and your expectations performance wise.
A lot of folks in the Hamb old farts brigade have left knees that no longer are up to pushing a clutch pedal as much as might be required in really driving our flathead powered hot rod and the automatic lets them keep driving. I've got a friend who lost his left leg in an accident years ago. No way is he able to push a clutch even though he gets around real well on his artificial leg and tells me that I walk worse than he does and I damned well do when I get tired. He can't drive a stick but has no problem with an automatic.

Thank You, wonder if it was because it did not work well at highway speed or if it was a slug.
