I can't add too much to this post. Most of the good ones have been mentioned already.

You can't go wrong with most of these - there are HAMB members working for almost all of the better known mags here.

And I like the artsy editing Evel did, it fits in with the attitude of our side of the hobby. It also made it feel like an old movie. Those old movies used to be acted/edited horribly, standards were not as high as what we know of today and the equipment was about as high tech as a hammer. Watch a movie like "The Choppers" - you'd think it was made by high schoolers.

CKDeluxe - The only one that I can get my hands on w/out going to a show or swap meet. It is the magazine that OSR wants to be.

OSR - I won't buy it. It's to scenester-ish. Makes us look like a parody. I like most of the cars and I like the idea of a mag that doesn't force feed the advertisers into every car arty, but the trade-off sucks....almost as bad as the editing.

Rod & Custom - take a little dash of Hot-Rod and add a splash of Custom, some old stuff, some new stuff, mix well.....yummy. Not always traditional, but at least it's well done. Call it the Olive Garden of mags - americanized for mass appeal. Plus it employs HAMBers all of the time. [IMG] The HAMB numbers are down in the R&C house, but the end is not yet near.

Rolls & Pleats - cool mag, wish I could get it more often w/out subbing.

Garage - Stoner does good work, and he's not a poser.

Hop up - if you can't dig that mag, you might as well go back to skating.... [IMG]

Rodders Journal - expensive books showcasing (mostly) expensive cars. Worth reading.

Custom Rodder - Tons of cool cars that have been radically changed. The only drawback to this magazine is that it (or should I say it's owners) is (are) always trying to lean toward the air-bags/Dubs side (they are the largest advertisers for the mag so what do you expect) but the writers and editors are always trying to push it back to the trad stuff. Bottom line if you're like me and can see past the billet aluminum rims and SBC crate engines you'll enjoy some really cool cars.

Street Rodder - evil, plastic, synthetic, fake, rich people and the cars that they have built for them... [IMG] (with a few exeptions)

Hot Rod - The vintage ('50s - '60s) mags are the shit. The one you find in the news stand today is geared toward musclecars and how to make more power from powerplant X. It has been changing lately, but it won't likely come far enough to our side of the car hobby to satisfy me.

Popular Hot Rodding - (this is where I come out of the closet) I like it!! It has tons of artys on building unique engines. It has been pushing musclecars in a fresh new direction (read G-Machines/Pro Touring) making the musclecar go from a single task hulk to a muli-tasking performance machine. It makes it worth looking into having a musclecar now because you can really build them to drive now. If you get beat in a drag race - it's not over anymore, and PHR has had everything to do with that.....and Scotch is my hero, so that stands for something.

I'd add more but I am sure you've had quit enough by now.....plus I might catch shit for this, but remember it's only an opinon - not fact.

  4. The hotrod company..........aka HAMBer sidevalve's site.

Barracuda jack up all their prices when THEY start running outta stock........plenty of others out there with stock. I just got 30 more copies myself.

Only time will tell, re: CKD. It's a one man show now...

I was going to make a post about the Peter Vincent book, and found this post from a search. Anybody own it, or know about it? It looks like a nice $40.00 coffee table book, but I didn't want to yank the shrink wrap off it in the store.

A couple of other books, some mentioned, some not.

Gasser Wars - Too cool, good visual history.

The Birth of Hot Rodding - Maybe not the last word on dry lakes racing, but some great vintage color photos in this inexpensive book by Robert Genat.

Old Hot Rod mags - Can't beat real history.

Roaring Roadsters, Vol. 1 & 2. - These Tex Smith published books don't always have the best photo quality, but they do have a ton of vintage photos you won't see anywhere else.

    Hop Up Annuals - Great!

The 12 Port News - Published by Inliners International; I've been a member for years, its just an old favorite. Lots of home-grown tech on obsolete engines.

Rodders Digest - I know, they cover both street rods and hot rods, but damn, I'm glad this rag is available again!

  8. Rodder's Journal and I still love to read Rodder's Digest. My brother gives me a gift-sub for Car Craft every year and I enjoy reading about the low-buck drag/street machines. Last issue, my brother got a story published in it! His first.

  9. Rolls & Pleats and Garage are by far the best mags out nowadays. I love 'em!

I still enjoy R&C and Custom Rodder.

If ya like pinstriping and airbrushing, Auto Art magazine is the one.

Peter Vincents books are great the second one is maybe a little more artsy. Worth the $40 or even more worth the $27 I paid on Amazon...+ my car is on the back cover.

And the best Hot Rod book I've ever picked up is "The birth of hot rodding" by Robert Genat and Dan Cox. Full of color pictures of dry lakes racing from the late '40's and early '50's. The only color pictures of hot rodding I've ever seen from the era (I didn't even know there was color photography around back then). It's just weird to look at all those old cars in full color.

My favorite mags are Rodder's Journal, Hop Up, and Rod & Custom. I second (third? fourth?) the vote for the book "The Birth of Hot Rodding". Nothing like seeing the old rides in color...

rodders journal, hop up, ckdeluxe, roll n pleats, those are my favs. i used to love rod and custom, but latley, not so much. ol skool rods is alright too. but they need to get rid of the waste of mag space. like the center fold of dumb rat drawings. center folds were made for bad ass cars and fine ass broads.(sorry ladies of the hamb). im am a magazine junkie though i buy them all. even lowrider

Custom Car from the UK is a pretty cool mag. It's been going for over 30 years and covers a broad spectrum of cars but doesn't seem to lose sight of it's hotrod roots (even though it lost the plot totally in the '80s!).

I do not buy magazines anymore.........except TRJ.

I used to be a magazine junky.........then I found the HAMB... [IMG]

I like traditional looking old cars......not Alloway speedstars, Coast to Coast fiberglass or similar stuff. I do not like the stupid 20, 22 and larger rims with O ring tires. I like a car to look mostly like it did from Henry. [IMG]........You cannot "improve" a 32 Ford, a 40 Ford or a few others. You can improve a 49 - 51 Mercury by lowering the lid.

Just me and my 2 cents.......

Holy chit, how do you guy's afford any car parts [IMG] [IMG].

    R&C- cause I like it
Streetrodder- I look past the billet stuff and look at details for ideas.
OSR- 'cause I like stupid shit and I get it for the cars.
CKD- thats the mag(HRD) that got me fired up to this style of cars. So I'm a loyal servant er I mean reader to the mag.
Rolls and Pleats- I have 3 issues that I picked up, very nice mag. I should get a sub.
Kustoms Ilust.- I picked up issue #2 from Chrome-it. Very good read, need to sub and find #1

I plan on looking into these others when extra $ is available. There is just so many cool ones out there now. later plmczy

My favorite still is Tex Smith's "Hot Rod Mechanix"...always dedicated to low buck builds and tips in a time when all the other mags did nothing but encourage you to build a "I-800" street rod. Geez, THAT hasn't changed!

i'm still thumbing through my old Auto Buff mags. [IMG] Custom Car was really cool, i found them at the 50th Oakland Roadster show, bought a copy of each issue they had, and subscribed for a couple of years. unfortunately, it costs more than a subscription to TRJ, but you do get 12 a year instead of 4.

the eye opening FACT about euro rodders (and aussie, kiwi, japanese, etc) is they are the hardest of hard core. everything is way more expensive, raw material almost doesn't exist, garage/storage space is a luxury for most, and they talk funny, too. [IMG] mf

I really like Rod & Custom and Custom Rodder, I dont realy care for the OSR cause its more of popularity contest of death rods. I really like rodders journal too. I pretty much decided that if i quit buying every magazine with a car in it I could actually buy car parts and fix my car that Ive got scattered all over my friends shop.

  28. I agree with 54bomb to many death rods in OSR.Aperrently thats why they don't show any detailed pics. Not renewing my subscription.I like Rolls and Pleats,Rod and Custom, and the old American Rodder.

CRAP!! I just counted my mags and multiplied them by $6.00(the average price in Canada) Now I see why I can't afford the parts I want.Think I'm gonna by fewer mags.
