Hey guys, Been into VWs since birth, but have always had an appreciation for some good old American steel. And I've been dealing with a twinge of wanting to sell off my old reliable VW camper lately and picking up a Shoebox Ford or Rambler wagon or something. Not sure if I actually will, but I'm hoping the HAMB will give me some idea if it's really what I want to do.
Hello.. WELL, I can actually say I know what you are doing, As I did the same. I sold off my 62 Standard and 57 Double Door Panel to pick up a 51 that you see in my avatar. I have not looked back. In fact, I am looking at more American projects. I will say this.. the prices on American are very different than Type II's.. won't go into detail, but you will understand soon enough. Good luck on your search.. There are plenty of Shoeboxes out there.. Do you want a certain model ? 49-50 look similar but are different.. 51 looks completely different with the grill and tail light spears and trunk hinges. Also do you want a Coupe or Sedan ? short roof vs longer roof ? and so on. Here are some build threads.. Grab a drink and hunker down to the computer http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/group.php?do=discuss&group=&discussionid=29641
Welcome to the HAMB, I've been there myself, selling off a newer OT (Off Topic) project to get something that represents your personallity. Good luck on your search, you'll find more than enough examples to consider. When you do, you MUST post your new find and share photos of its' progress.
Well, nice to know I'm not the only one. And I know if I go this route, I'm not going to rush into a project. I think having grown up around a station wagon, I kind of want to relive that nostalgia, but with a family I'd be just as content with a four-door sedan. The bus market is strong right now and I think between 8 and 9 is a realistic price for my bus. Having poked around a little, it looks like I can find a driver for between half and two-thirds that amount, leaving me a little to fix things or accessorize.
Boy, I have to share that I really am enamored with the 1958-1961 era Rambler Cross Country wagons, but I'm trying to research parts availability for them. Like brake bits and the like. Also like the early 60s Falcon wagons. Those are pretty neat and I presume the parts are perhaps a little more available given the fact they're Fords.
