Typical mopar man...good for you, you guys have to stand your ground. I'm not the typical bow tie guy, I just like what I build and my choice personally is chevy. I never said that chevy was the first to have 1hp/ci, and truth be told I do not care. If you are so full of the hemi being god, you better stay away from the OT little four cylinder guys, they might rain on your parade.

What do you conside huge cubic inched BBchevy? I do have several huge inch small block chevies that produce 750-830hp, if you conside 388-434 cubic inches huge. I'm not taking anything from the hemi...hell I really beat on the BBF in that post, but it was done as a s**** much like all of the replies in this post. There are programs that can model specifics, and they are at times quite accurite, but not all of them. To me the only way to know is build it and run it...then you know for sure. Like you also said, the biggest problem is being honest with the specs of the componants that a person is using.

Bottom line, sorry if you was offended by my superior calculation method for horsepower capabilities of the naturally aspirational internal spontaneous combustion engines. CHEVIES RULE!!!

by the way, my SBC is lighter than your hemi!!!:D and no I'm not saying your hemi is fat......

3. You forgot the explosion factor - BBC's lose all horsepower when the bottom end is all over the track.

Why not be like most every "motor" guy that I seem to run into..... Pick a number at random.

Or take the amount of $$$ spent, divide it by 8 (# of cyl) divide that by shoe size and round up to the nearest 100.

I just use the fact that all internal combustion engines are capable of producing a given amount of HP and/or TQ per cubic inch. This is based on engine design(stroke/bore/rod length/reciprocating weight/valve size/runner efficiency/total intake runner-vs-plenum volume/etc.) and are as follows:

SBC: 2hp/ci
BBC: 2-3hp/ci
Early Hemi:1.25hp/ci
Late Hemi: 1.75hp/ci
SB mopar:1hp/ci
BB mopar:1.125hp/ci
SBF: .5625hp/ci
BBF: .75hp/ci

I do have the formulas for other engines as well, just email me at boydoiknowhorsepowerandasyoucanseeilikesbcnbbcmuch morethananythingelse@imayahoo.com
and tell me what engine you have and I will give you the correct formula.
<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

these numbers arent accurate at all in particularly the Ford numbers a ford will make as much power per cubic inch as a chevy . look at nascar 358 cubic inches and nearly 900 horsepower and thats onn all the brands of engines . i personally built a 347 with 9.5 to 1 running on pump gas that was putting out 405 hp at the wheels on pump gas and at 4200 feet.

Irony (from the Ancient Greek εἰρωνεία eirōneía, meaning hypocrisy, deception, or feigned ignorance) is a situation, literary technique or rhetorical device, in which there is an incongruity, discordance or unintended connection that goes beyond the most evident meaning. It is the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite.

Dude, to put it simply, it's a JOKE...read the email address carefully, and try not to be so serious:p

The reason the Ford guys didn't get too uptight and make a bunch of responses is we know a joke when we see one (like a Chevy for instance) and don't have to defend or brag - just waiting for you to line up next to us at the "tree"

10. Evil,
I am not offended in anyway. It thrills me to see the Chevy guys using inferior sceince. Sort of like a gift.
Anyway i also respect your right to love what you love.
All the best Don

When you have a cam with split lift(.560 int. and .590 exh.) do you use the intake number, exhaust number, or add them together and divide by two to get an average?

Good lord. Poor guy has been registered since 2005 and after 4 1/2 years finally has the nerve to make a post and ask a reasonable question and he gets the **** beat out of him. Studebakers make 4-5hp/ci by the way, add it to the top of the list.

In my world: stock high perf 2-stroke - honest 4Hp/ci.

That is only exceeded by the Hudson Hornet twin H power.

Seriously, if you really want to get into this, get a copy of Dynomation. Its the lowest cost simulation software that comes close to modelling engines the way OEMs do.

The problem with all "specs" and formulas:
They work very well, if you're intimately familiar with the flow characteristics of your particular head casting (not just "small block Ford Windsor"), parasitic losses of your bearings, oil pump, etc., thermal efficiency (quench? swirl? chamber surface to volume ratio?), etc.

You don't have all the SASE, blueprint, destructive testing, flow bench data?
The result is exactly as good as your guess.

17. You could average the intake and exhaust if you like. Very good question My own take on that is this. Longer exhaust duration is usually because a particular engine needs an extra moment to get rid of exhaust as compared to most engines which can quite easily do that with the same duration and lift as intake even though that doesnt really seem possible so I would use just the intake. That method is just a rough method I developed over years of work and works for a quick idea on a street motor. That is often all you need anyway.
Panic.
I think you are a little too stuck on theoretical stuff. It was after all the SAE who came up with PLANK and it is about useless. You would be amazed what a good mech/machinist can come up with after 30 ro 40 years hands on experience. The computer programs espeacially Dyno 2000 and all its versions are surprisingly accurate. There is a companion book that is avaialble with them (or was anyway when I got mine ) It explains how and why of a lot of it. Doesnt have a lot of pictures but is very good info. Many OEM engineers working even in this field do not have, nor have they seen, nor are they aware that flow benches exist. Kind of shocking but from the questions i have asked to appears to be true. I am just as shocked as you with that one. I have talked to them both sides of the Atlantic ocean too. The North American as well as the Australian and area Hot Rod scene is astounding. the progress that has been made, much of it by ordinary people looking to go faster, is unbelievable. Thomas Edison who was concieved in Canada and born in the USA said it best. "Inventions are made by people too stupid to know it wont work." Couldnt have said it better myself. It expains it all. There is a hidden message in that quote we all can learn from. (if we read between the lines)

18. Scared? I think not. I am currently in the USMC and while dealing with the normal everyday military headaches on top of preparing to go to Afghanistan in the very near future I don't have much time to play online. So sorry for not posting an intro, it will happen soon.

Why dont you post some info on what you are building and what parts you have in mind for the build? That would help get some answers
