I know right! I feel bad on one hand for asking Mark if he would do a sketch of my imagined car on paper, but on the other hand it gets me really pumped. I can't wait to see this thing in my driveway!

I still have to make bucks for the upper and lower caps for the middle bar. And I haven't got a handle on the shutters yet like I made one test piece that worked out before. I think I will try I again when I soon get a bead roller to do my floors.
Although my wife isn't onboard with hot rod flooring in our house[emoji38]

So @Ford Mike asked me the other day in possible fear that I might do something wrong... "I hope you are doing it shiny not patina!" He was asking about the frame at the time but the body as well has been questioned before.
This goes all the way back to when I first got the car and wanted to build it in less than a year, like 362 days or something. I wanted to leave the original paint that I thought really looked like it could be mean as hell when finished. I was going to blend in all my repairs and end up with something similar to...
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1468244982.299335.jpg
    Or
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1468245093.904090.jpg
    A couple of my favs.
After I was bullied at the bus stop to not do this and decided to give in and paint it a color that wasn't maroon or black that to me reeks of 40s, I then asked the photo shop boys to add a 09 Scion xB color hypnotic teal mica. This color has had my attention for a few years. I find it strange if not ugly on one of these modern imports. I probably only noticed this paint ever because my wife drives one of these cars.
Now this decision put the whole car's finish down another path. I then decided to work out a plan that is similar to what I wanted for my 32 PU but a notch rougher or weathered if you will. This all will be in an effort to help keep the finished car looking like it was built in 46-48, not buy me. Although I've had this level of finish figured out before getting the issue of Hot Rod that featured Aaron Von Minden's 34 coupe, his car is the closest thing I'm finding lately to use as an example for those of you that worry and wonder. (I took these of the web, thanks Google)

No disrespect to his car, cause I believe it's perfect, mine will be a little less distressed in the body paint department but close.
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1468246706.328022.jpg
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1468246749.464174.jpg
Overall the same balance of cared for and finely aged
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1468246793.251359.jpg
    So cool!
I couldn't bring myself to really use the paint off a Toyota stepchild so I ordered some Lacquer and it is post to be here today. We'll all see if it will have the right look soon. I'll do some test parts since I'm so anxious to find out.
Oh and another friend asked when it will be finished? I about fell over laughing when I replied "sure would like to be at next years HillClimb, don't know how I'll get it there" he said "or done".

    I FrIcking Love It!

As far as the faked patina goes I am so glad you a are planning on a single solid color. Fads ****!!! Build a car you will be proud to drive ten or fifteen years from now.

Or do people not remember pink pastel monochrome 80-90's hot rod colours? How would you wanna drive a pink 32 coupe around with a nice tarnished billet grill and some sweet yellow heartbeat vinyl graphics on the sides?

I always want on other threads to post a love ****on or sometimes even a... egh? ****on.
As far as "patina" goes... " let me make one thing perfectly clear" if people aren't catching this. I will be distressing this car or aged/weathering. Which in all honesty is "Fake". I can't personally have fresh show quality paint directly next to or touching 80 plus year old door handles, windshield frames, grill ornaments and inserts that I purchased on purpose to gain a certain look and finish.
I won't be intentionally sanding through the primer although I have no qualms with that look. If the car is finished and that happens it'll be cause I screwed up as usual not on purpose. Mostly what I do to get a dull finish is skip a lot of normal steps and basically do a shotty cut and buff, well actually hand rub. I won't concern myself with clean rags, direction, consistency, or perfection. It's sounds easy but it's basically the same but wrong kinda work.

Alright please don't laugh on this one. I think I bit off more than I could chew with out ol' oxy acetylene. This has been really hard for me with just map gas and a 4.5" poopy diaper vise that won't hold anything.
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1468292720.318915.jpg
I got mad once at a spot just to the drivers side of the center and took a sledge to it.
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1468292785.250497.jpg
I accentuated the center a tad on purpose. I thought it is more like the way I always think the peek is in the shell( although it's not).
Should be fun to clean up, lol. It's not even close to nice but I think it looks the part. Now time to decide how close to tuck it in. The more I stray from where it sits now the less it will have that partial track bumper look I was talking about.
I couldn't hold the V8 emblem up there and the stainless while taking a pic, it's awkward holding it from one side even with little vise grips ***isting the other.
I may get reinvigorated to try some more but right now I'm just depressed about not getting anywhere on the car and keep falling short of the quality I expect. Good thing I don't want a show car, I probably couldn't pull it off.
I used at least one traditional tool to bend this up. A short section of a split model A bone. The bung welded to one end for the ball joint fit the 5/8s rod perfect.

Did you make a pattern or just try and "eye ball" it?

Sometimes even a paper pattern helps me find out where the "foibles" are. Then things look better.

Thanks, I believe this has been mentioned before, but your post is the first where it just registered in my thick skull. A friend had offered to loan me his good tig welder. I turned him down saying that at times I already get bummed about how even the mig welds don't seem to look period, it would be nice for the body though.
I'm going to embrace this angle and quit hypocriting myself. It's tuff when seeing all the high quality that is on the HAMB.
Ok, I'll try, no more whining, Wyatt.

I think once there is color on the car and the stock crank hole piece given to @383duece the V8 emblem will pop and look the way I see it in my noggin.

I have to polish it out and get back on the grill and firewall.

Ok. I've been waiting for a chance to say this and I like you enough to actually say it to you and not just think it.

With the look you want for that paint this is what I recommend.

    Try your hardest.
    Vomit and puke in stress
Prep it like its all you can do.
Try to keep the filler to extreme minimums hammer and dolling the metal to where it needs to be.

Then paint it with a single stage paint, be relieved that it's over and drive it for a year before wet sanding, buffing and polishing it knowing full well that YouTube videos didn't show you enough and be afraid of going threw the paint and into primer.

Then wash it down and give it a good coat of wax. Like paste turtle wax.

That's exactly what I did. I'm not a painter and it's obvious lol I tried pretty damn hard to make it nice and it still ended up with sings I didn't see and funny things here and there. And it's not so nice that it makes my acres of 40's trim look like dog **** next to it.

I see all my non intentional flubs and hope no one notices and the first four times I took the car out I had people tell me I shouldn't even restore it just keep it like it is, how they were impressed how well that old paint has held up and "man this is just like they really where back when I was a kid"

As far as I can gather your not a professional body man or painter. Try your best given your time and budget constraints and I promise it won't look like a $20,000 paint job. It will look perfect. Your lack of experience and muscle memory will age and flaw it plenty with no need for purposely ****ing it up<- said with no ill will toward your intended finish, I totally get it-

Anyhow. My two cents from someone who doesn't know what he's doing ;)

Thanks Tim. Sadly I was a professional body man and painter, albeit 15+ years ago. I've done a few since but nothing regular. But I am painting stuff all the time it seems like. True it is a craft that you never can seem to get perfect, one of the reasons I moved on to other endeavors.
I hope this doesn't come across as arrogant but the paint for me is the least stressing part of the build. Well other than its never easy and something always to go wrong.
Stay tuned to hear me say you told me so cause I seem to keep on screwing this build up.

Coming together is a stretch[emoji23] I work on it for an hour or two a day if I'm lucky. I still don't know where to find the last few thousand dollars to finish.
Thanks Jeff and all others, sincerely, you guys are a big part of what gets me out there in the messy and hot garage. I have never wanted something so bad as this car finished, well that and we all know how much I like to post.[emoji16]

I keep coming back to this photo trying to figure out what it's voice sounds like in the next cars movie lol.

I dig it man, With the pines front and the crank hole gone it will look completely different. And even more so after paint/polish etc. but if I squint I think I can see it and it looks pretty good. I agree the focus will shift to the emblem on the nerf bar

Chin strap flowing into shock mounts/headlight mounts is by far my favorite piece on this car. You nailed it man. Nice job.

Seeing the louvers yesterday reminded me this going to be a hot rod!
ADHD decided I should focus some attention to the engine. I bounce around a lot if you haven't noticed. It is just the way I've always been.
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1468439367.319174.jpg
I've been die'n to start polishing my Merc crank. I didn't get much done as it started to rain. I do almost all my grinding on the side of the house. This minimizes the filth in the garage and it gets me a little further away from waking the napping children.
If this works out as good as I think it will, I've been researching this for a long time, I probably will get it stroked. What's an extra 1/8th between friends when you already have to get it balanced anyway.[emoji53]
I go Saturday to get my front bones finally so next week this thing will be a mocked up rolling ch***is. I still need shocks, wheel studs, brake lines, wheel cylinders, and the front tie rod to complete this step. I better get back to polishing my spindles, jeez.

Are you going to run a crank s****er and a windage tray? Stroked, balanced, tray, aluminum flywheel, magneto, big cam and some carb trickery might just net you some real power outa that old flatty.
