Ok I lied so take me to court. I’m just too giddy about this save. I am almost done with the dash mods and can start some light filler soon then color magic.

    Textbook bullet hole save
    [IMG]
I put a small piece of steel on top of a accordingly sized impact socket and held it down tight in a large C-clamp. Then heated and hammered it down around. Then cut most of its new sides back to not much left. Welded it into the damaged area.
Grind up nice and smooth “ish” for its new jewel.
I then added small pieces to both ends of the two sides. I tried to heat and hammer a soft edge but failed miserably. So I cut it down to a little bit narrower than I needed for a end result. Found some skinny rod laying around and welded it to the ends and ground it out some

In order to get that damn center switch mounted the way I’ve shown. I had to change my plans due to its short “bezel” depth. I whipped up this little solution to get down.
It screws in on the back side but comes out the front once you remove the engine turned panel
    [IMG]
Now I have to add three mounting studs for the tach and three also for the speedometer, make a bracket to hold a light and socket sideways behind the cool jewel oil light lens, and drill four holes under the top dash section for some warbird instrument lights to aim down at the gauges. After that’s all done I hope the weather will warm up a little so I can body and paint man this thing to awesome town.
It’s going to match the 40 De Luxe wheel. For those who haven’t waisted their time reading back through a bazillion pages of BS here’s a refresher pic

Yeah I thought it would be the biggest deviation from stock dash layout not that long ago. Now most wont even notice it. All because I can’t afford the cigar lighter, hah. Should go great with some billet door handles[emoji6]
Now I’ll need a oil sending unit to signal low pressure and turn it on. It will be cool to see it at night when starting the engine, but not while driving, yikes.
This whole dashboard debacle is testament to my nac for spiraling out of control given the time to pipe dream. If I did one of those TV builds it would end up cookie cutter for sure.

I picked up some hammertone green the other day. So I took the underdash heater apart today.
The core looked pretty good but someone screwed a hole into it putting it back together and you can see it leaked all over the inside by the splashy rust pattern inside the main body.
I’ll probably look into a modern common alternative to stick in there.
It be nice to use a way smaller fan to shrink the entire unit down. 6v may be a limiting factor I don’t know.
And finally I think the chrome vent is a touch too ruff but a fresh finish would be well... too fresh.

    A tip
Those plastic dish cloths made from recycled plastic are perfect for cleaning old Chrome. With some dish soap and a little elbow grease it comes up really nice, without scratching the hell out of it like steel wool.

  9. Hey rat,
You talking about "micro fiber cloth"?

Upon further inspection the screw hole doesn’t mean a thing. Guess it needs a pressure check. It’s really clean so I can’t imagine it is original to the ***embly without having been overhauled. I wonder if the rust I mentioned is just from a seller cleaning it up or just a previous failure. I could see on the fan blades that it was fluffed on some level before I got it.

I am trying to decide if I like these 33 louvers.
I bought them on the cheap to cut just the 23 louvered section out to install into my original sides. I like the way they roughly line up with my hood louvers, are a larger more obnoxious size, most likely would cool better, and lastly how they would be placed more towards the cowl with just one louver added going forward towards the grill. I didn’t want 25 sides cause I think they are played out.
Sadly they taper from a 14 1/4” width from the rear down to 13” in the front. I thought about adding material to all the short ones to make them even. This is a fair amount of work. Holding them up against the car they don’t look so bad. I worry that some will notice right away that they are 33s from the taper and it would be uncool.
Here’s the stockers that look maybe too model A ‘ish for my build?

    33s again
Oh and here my great priced cl***ifieds aircraft light for my interior
    [IMG]
I might lightly sandblast the inside of the lens to gift it a frosted look?

I like the 33 sides better. What about 33 truck hood sides? Similar louvers and no taper.
What about putting some of that funky stick on stuff for bathroom windows on the inside of the light?

They are 33 truck hood sides.
I’m stoked cause they will only need a small amount of alteration to fit my pickup. I think the lower body line shows promise with my mild frame pinch and channel job. I’ll probably take the louvers from the 32s and weld em in and add extras from a donor 32 side.

I'm not sure on the louvers, but on the dome lens, I wouldn't sandblast it. I tried that on a home light fixture and it looked terrible. Heavily pitted the gl*** and changed the color of the light p***ing through from a light yellow to an orange glow.

Just had to show you the screwdriver my grandpa gave me to adjust carbs. Seen you had one like it. It’s a small world. I just got a ton more parts and I’m throwing in a few things for ya. Surprises for my lack of mailing you your parts for like 6 months or so now. Trying to catch up on the Hamb. The dash looks killer.

  20. I got a 32 3w dome light but yours is way cooler. I like the small aircraft goodies your using.

Thanks Boss! I have have a 32 dome light as well. I wasn’t even going to use one until I came up with a copper sheet to louver for a roof insert. When I saw corndog had this listed for $20 and free ride I had to have it.
I love the military theme stuff for a 40s postwar build. Believe it or not I’m trying with all mite to walk a very fine line here. My end goal is that of a authenticity that one may believe the original builder was clearly a ex-serviceman, worked on aircraft, or lived near a Army surplus. I hope it doesn’t shout out too loud but rather simply feels right to the timeframe.

I’m not sure why you’d give a **** that someone may know what year vehicle the louvers came from. But I’m the guy that has been talking about different intake and exhaust designs for three months lol

It has something to do with my own crazy I guess. I’ve gone pretty nuts with the concept that the car is a 32 1/2 or 3/4s. My hope is that it never appears to be a 34 with a 32 grill and hood. I’m not trying to lie or trick anyone and I won’t keep it a secret or something. I don’t get off at others expense ya know. It’s in the same vain as making it look like a old build. With close inspection astute car guys will realize it’s a new build. I only aim to give it the strongest first impression and vibe that I can muster. Most of it is about the “time machine” effect I’m after for my own personal enjoyment. I worry that the 33 commercial louvers might be a dead giveaway that something is amiss.
I’m going to cut the 33s out soon and place them over the 32 hood sides. The front tires will obstruct some of the views that may show the taper. I’m probably going to use the big 33s for sure. Now it’s about if I leave the taper.
I finished up the metal work to the dash and even added 9 defrost holes per side. I applied light filler and am waiting for a warmer day to prime it. I’ve been selling the last of my recording equipment to fund more progress and trying to finish the front seats.

I will add that I would never use 33/34 p***enger louvers. Their strong taper a layback would totally be the extreme end of what I’m worried about with these PU ones.
Also the 33 pickup louvers are centered closer to the hood tops. I will position them at the same height as the 32s.
Wait till I get crazy about my headers[emoji851]

I guess what I should have said is I can understand being bothered by the taper or size of the louvers, the placement and etc.

It just read that that wasn’t the issue but that the louvers were identifiable as being from the truck. That I didn’t get.

Your further obsessive ramble clarified what you actually ment though.
