So as for the mild aging, distressing, fauxpatina, or relic-ing of this project as I spoken of before. I have come close to mastering this in my mind on my guitars I build. In that world they might refer my style most near to a “closet cl***ic” I believe. I describe it as having the illusion of age corresponding to its era and lifestyle. My guitars look like they have been used somewhere between rarely and somewhat often for 60 years in a home environment. Having some light scuffing and wear through, a few nics, and a couple gouges from inevitable accidents not neglect and frequency. Mostly they possess dulling, corrosion, and rusting of the nickel or chrome parts. The main thing is the lacquer paint having checking and a light sheen not a buffed shine. It’s also thin to seem rubbed through from being polished over and over again plus the playing. Also the wood grain texture shows through lightly at angles.
The dash is only started on this since I want to feel it out for a while. It’s going to be tough to bring myself to attacking the stainless insert after all we’ve been through. It looks far to new for the build as of yet. I have to swap out the speedo bezel and clean the face some. I have found a lighter socket yet that fits my NOS Santay.
For the paint I skip and half *** standard bling shiny procedures. I wet sanded it with 800 cause I was out of 1000 and I was carful to not cut through. I can go there later if I want to add that but I don’t know why a dash needs to be rubbed through. Then I hand buffed it with compound and these soft scrotchbrite type things my wife had in the laundry room that act as filters for the heat and air registers. I ditch all other buffing steps. Sometimes I may wax stuff later but with a ****py sock or rag not being very careful. After the compound on the dash I used comet with a damp red shop rag. It has a few light scratches already from installing the gauges. This sort of thing plays in my favor. Having the steering wheel and dash done far in advance sets them up to acquire some accidents before the car is ready. It is far too nice currently.
    Gotta go catch my breath.

I like the dash and the vibe your car has. I like the shiny paint. let the car tell you what it needs as you go, in more of an organic method. Nose art and skulls are to contrived. Let the journey to completion provide the depth. Sinister it will be based on the fact that soul can't be faked.

And like the look with both wipers and mirrors. It will provide a sense of visual reference to the chop.

Just found this build and read it start to finish over the last few evenings. While couped up in a hotel for work.

So many things to say. So few haven't been said. This build is insane. You may be too @Runnin shine lol

Your engine turned panel looks killer. Love all the old chrome bits.

I personally like the skull art (on the cowl not on the nose) but I like the, more original to your build, numbers and lettering on the cowl better.

As for the veterans thing my dad's dad served in the Pacific as a navy aviation machanic. Dad always tells the story of them playing with toy guns as a kid (in the 50's) and as long as they didn't call it playing war grandpa was ok with it but would get very upset at playing war. Same game but just that little difference was enough to bring out his emotional side. As most of my ramblings this thought doesn't really have a point.

Anyway love the build, the direction, the execution, etc. I can't wait to watch the rest unfold.

On the sides it’s just solid rod. I do t care much about the weight. They’ll be in the middle of light or heavy. These things are about budget. As much warbird style I can muster without going crazy. When finished I’ll have around 50 to 75 bucks in the pair.

That NOS lighter and vintage socket will be part of the 6v system. The car will have a positive ground wiring. I’m planning to hide and run the cheap China junk socket somewhere. It will have to be isolated cause I’m going to hook it up to a separate hidden small 12v motorcycle battery so I can charge a modern device. I’ll just hook it up to a battery tender when the car is in the garage.

if you can squeeze another 6 volt battery in some where you can tap the 12 volts off of both and charge both 6 volts with the generator................someone smarter than me @Crazy Steve will have to tell you how to wire it tho.....

I had two twelve volt batteries in my old power wagon to make 24volt. I used one to run 12volt accories.

There is no reason why you couldn't run two six volt batteries to run the accessories and the starter and runthe ignition and lights off the six volt circuit. If fact that would likely be the best way to go about it. It all is in how and where you hook the cables up. A volt meter is your friend.

What’s awesome is the way most of you spend your time actually working on hot rods. Where as I am busy worrying if I have the right NOS 40s valve stem caps[emoji851]

What about the tires Shine...those are rollers right?...I got some cool metal valve caps from Grandmas/Grandpas junk collection and they are mine now but there is only two so its still plastic for now. They aren't the duel purpose cap like yours are. I'm thinking they may have had plastic for my magic period year of 1962ish.

    Kinda like mosquitoes aren't we...:p

I read back into the thread and saw some discussion on Excelsior. Are the tires on the Hotrod the new ones? They look new. That is a name that certainly has roots deep into the heart of the era of speed. They have several series of these tires. I also did notice you had a want for certain tread patterns and looks are a big driver in all of this for sure.

Excellent work and keep up going. How is your winter grill progressing?

Well I’m trying to get the seats wrapped up. I bought the hardware for the base pivots yesterday and the drab olive green paint. I’m waiting on some cool phenolic 1” round knobs for the adjusters and flip forward release from the U.K. Yesterday I cut out four new side plates. The previous four I got the lower bead wrong and the seat base would be positioned too close to the back and not be able to adjust.
Then it’s all chop shop. After I get the roof bows done I’ll remove the top and shorten the quarters and frame. I’ve been investigating the crown in the header. If you have followed any of the thread you’ll see there is no predictable rhyme or reason to my madness. So in summation I’m sure I’ll be working on it soon with the chop stuff. Especially since I just got an original grill shell that I’m excited to repair.

Asking for opinions on this. I purchased a 2” dimple die to do all the holes I wanted to extend across the tops of my inner doors and quarter window regulator panels. I’ve known for a long time I wanted to add some to the tops of the front seat to tie them in to this look. Once the seat back fabric and padding is in you will see stained wood peaking through. I am quite happy with them and it was super easy. Now I can’t decide whether to do more.

I’ve been researching wwii fighter pilot seats for ever now. Most don’t have a bunch of dimples holes in them. But some have a few. I like the look of them a lot but when you search bomber seats you get “bombarded” with custom fab’d ones. Some get carried away and look pretty darn cheesy or clearly non-period. I don’t want to make that mistake. What should I do?
Yes I still have to tackle the oil canning on the back. I made some headway with this on the other but it doesn’t have holes yet and decided to try adding holes this time before screwing with the wavy nightmare. I will grind down the weld and do a little body work to make it appear as one stamping. I’m not expecting these to look nice just old and cool.

Real ones have a stiffener riveted into them. You could try something like that?

I think with the existing 4 holes it looks like I came from something else. Like a plane/ tank/ whatever.

With all the others I think they just turn... sorta generic? If I saw them as they sit now I’d ask about them. With more holes I’m not sure I’d even look at them past a glance.
