Projects Hubcap restoration?

Discussion in 'Traditional Customs' started by Ferdyeight, Sep 28, 2024.

  1. Anyone got a good place i can send a set of hubcaps to be restored to at least driver quality? And roughly how much it would cost? 500? A grand? 5 grand? The hubcaps in question are 53 Meteor (Canadian ford, and not mercury) and they're going on my 53 ford customline. Ford hubcaps are stainless and these i believe are sheetmetal and chromed. 20240928_190104.jpg

@J.Fishbeck straightened and polished all the stainless for my Ranch Wagon. Did a nice job and his other fab work is impressive as well. IMO He might be able to handle the job. He's in San Bernardino so not all that far from NorCal. Worth a PM. Again, IMO.

Any place that does chrome plating and stainless molding repair can do hubcaps as well, if they're chrome plated, they're going to have to be rechromed. I used to work at a chrome plating shop and we got surprisingly very few hubcaps that came through, but we would do them, the process is the same.

The gold centers on the Meteor caps look like die cast and a separate piece, I'm thinking those are going to be pretty pricey to have restored. The centers alone might be $250 each to have redone, depending on what the gold is (much cheaper if they're painted) and the caps could be an easy $200 each or more depending on condition.

You might check in Hemming's or make the trip out to Hershey next week and look for vendors. Maybe some of us fortunate right-coasters can keep an eye out for you.

  7. Try Steve at Brightworks Restoration, 136 Kennedy St. Fall river, Ma. 02721. 1-508-672 5931. Steve has done a lot of stainless, and metal restoration for me. His prices are reasonable, and his work is top notch. I realize that he is on the other coast from you, but the brown and white trucks will get it there within a few days.

I found out years ago that the ‘56 Meteor wheel covers I have are actually chromed brass and not SS.
