Kind of a cool story. I teach adult ed. one night a week (USCG license prep) and I was talking with one of my new students last week and it turns out he is a old car guy. Anyway we start talking about my car project 50 Chevy sedan that I'm doing kind of a late 50's or early 60's look. So he tells me he's got this set of 4 hubcaps that he got over 30 years ago the were in the trunk of a 56 Vette he bought and that he ran them on a Studebaker he had. Well he doesn't have either car any more and they have been sitting in his attic for years and he brings em into class and says here I have no use for these any more. Here's a pic. What do ya think? I'm still undecided. They might look good with skinny whites. They are from National Wheel Cover and they are all steel VERY heavy. Also a photoshopped pic of the car "pretty close to what it will look like. Thanks as always. Todd
I had a set of those a lotta years ago,,,they were heavy made and look real CQQL for hubcaps,,, Go for it,,, I think it would look good and everybody and their brother don't have a set!HRP
put them on the car and find out. I'd vote for cheesy...any hubcap that tries to make a steel wheel look like a mag usually winds up short of the mark in my book. Just 'cause it is old, doesn't mean it is cool. Look at the matador for instance. ha ha!
I dig 'em. Go for it. Some pinstripe white walls, and dday'o your the s#it. For real though they are cool. Shane t.
"I'd vote for cheesy...any hubcap that tries to make a steel wheel look like a mag usually winds up short of the mark in my book." Ya know I was almost thinking the same thing. I don't want to look like some Guido with a set of $19.99 Pep Boys hubcaps. But.. if you look close at them they do have a nice deep lip and look pretty good. I was wondering if the rims were painted something other than black with them how they would look. Todd
Those are COOL covers ... but they are best left to hang on the garage or office wall. There's no getting around the fact that they are "fake" wheels, and if you wouldn't put other fake pieces on your car, don't run them. You will ALWAYS see the steel wheel underneath.
since the older gentleman saved them for this long, they obviously meant something to him. maybe throw 'em on your car and drive it to class next time. he'll likely appreciate it, and then i'd hang em on my garage wall. as stated before hubcaps made to look like wheels are cheesy... purely IMO
I don't know why but I love chincy hub caps...I mean not everybody had the money back in the day to buy the coolest wheels so you know they were on peoples cars. I think the hub caps are kinda fun, but the great thing about hub caps is you can change em'. I especially love National hub caps they made some really wacky designs. Heres a set I found on the bay that I stuck on my comet. Shot at 2006-07-19
Pretty cool. I used to work at a car lot and remember in the attic they had a shitload of old caps and one of the sets were SS Cragar style. Should have tried to get them just to have around for conversation. They were genuine I would say because the centers were Cragars.
You should roll with them for a while, I mean i think that if it looks anything like the photoshop pic then i think it looks sweet. Do you have any alternatives? What kind of rims do you have now? Throw then on there and post some pics, i bet they look sweet and im not really into hubcaps!
Interesting thread. Back in the 60s, Chevrolet made fake mag wheelcovers that could be had on Impalas, Chevelles, etc. They bring pretty good money now. I say run 'em and see how you like them. Back then, a lot of people who didn't have the money for wheels bought the wheelcovers that looked like wheels. So it would be traditional in that sense.
Maybe since this guy gave em' to you run em' a while just to be nice, but I think your car would look better with somrthing little.
I remember, around the same time, they sold the chrome wheel type wheel covers too. They were complete with spider centers. Wouldn't use either of these then or now. I agree with others. Hang them on the garage wall...............Woody
Here is a perfect example of why this board gets Lame sometimes. Guy gets a set of old Funky covers ( which i would have to run just because) And a bunch of people tell him they arent cool.... BUT, You see a post about how to PAINT on yer white walls and everyone just LOVES the idea cus it is CHEAP. My opinion is, if ya dont have a custom wheel or Bitch'in wheel covers on yer ride right now... Hang these caps on it & run with them till ya get the $$ for what you really want. I ran a set of the Fake Chrome Reverse ones in 13" on my daughters '62 Ford Falcon for about 8 months & fooled alot of people.. they would prolly still be there if one didnt disapper on the freeway one night.
Put them on your car. They might look kind of neat, or they could look really stupid. You won't know until you try them out. If they're stupid, spend 30 seconds with a screwdriver to fix the situation.
They are cheesy and fake want to be wheels. Go for some of those after market hub caps. Like the Lancer, or Desoto, or even some Baby Moons with trim rings. Anything but a hub cap the is supposed to look like a wheel. Even chrome wheel aren't that expensive.
they are cool because they are made of metal and are from the 60s, but they still look like 4 dollar plastic auto zone spinner hub caps, I vote for cheezy. Hang them on the garage wall and spray paint the steelies up nice.
I think I may still have one similar but is just the 5-spoke spider without the outer ring. Weren't something like this stock on mid-60s Comet Cyclones?
Those would make for good lookin clocks. I would make clocks out of them and sell them on e-gay for 250 bucks each.
