any fox body mustang, from the mid 80's through the mid 90's with the 5.0 in them. Beware of the newer mustangs, they use the GT40P heads, the holes are all the same, but the spark plugs do not angle into the heads, and these headers won't work on standard 302 heads...or 351W heads either...
This is the from the bottom of the car. I was looking towards the front with the transmission on my right side and the frame rail on the left. As you can see by the labeling, the frame is quite close to the collector. I think that there is about 5 to 7" of space between the two.
Thanks for the answer, I didn't realize it would be that simple. I'm glad that you explained there is a difference between the two types of heads, since I wouldn't have known about them having GT40P heads in the 90's.
I talked to Jegs tonight about the spacing and wanting a block hugging header with the center dump. The sales rep said that these would be a good idea with the 351W, but the motor mount may get in the way. I have swapped the motor mount to drop the engine 1/2" several months ago so I hope this will not be a problem. I may order these headers but please give me opinions of why this may not work. http://www.jegs.com/i/Hedman/500/88420/10002/-1 This picture shows the motor mount sticking out and may help out a bit. I can't really tell if the flange is going to get in the way, but I could just cut the excess off that may interfere.
Since you want to stay with a column shift this will work http://www.ebay.com/itm/1969-70-351...ies&vxp=mtr&hash=item41643c79d8#ht_500wt_1200 or you could use the ones shown in the lower part of the picture which are the early Mustang Hi-Po manifolds designed by Shelby which actually have decent flow. The second picture is a 1954 Ford with a 302 and the Shelby manifolds.http://www.cjponyparts.com/mustang-exhaust-manifold-pair-289-hi-po-1965-1973/p/EXM4/
The 88420 is a center drop right into the '54 crossmember but works real well if you have a '52-53 Ford.Did you notice the side note on the Jegs link that tells you "must be used with Trans-Dapt part 969-9716" which is a Ford Ranger conversion mount which makes ZERO sense.
Thanks for the help guys, I will take a look at the Shelby manifolds and the HI Po mustang manifolds. I did have the concern about the center dump being right at the crossmember so thanks for clearing that up too.
This is a new flat design header from Patriot, #H8482-1. The collector is slightly rear ward to clear motor mounts and center crossmembers and the flat collector design gives maximum steering clearance. I used them in a 29 Model A with Vega steering which is about as tight as you can get and they cleared.
I was looking at those yesterday. Do you have pictures of them mounted on the model A? I would like to see how tight it is to compare against mine.
This was the mark up set when I was designing them. They come with a curved reducer on the end, not the straight one in this shot. Keeps the exhaust up higher
I have a 351-w in a 56 f-100 and used the shorty-style hedman header#88650.It looks the same on the drivers side as yours but exits just below the firewall.
Hotrodden- That does look like a tight fit. They do look like a possible fit for the spacing that I have. I would need to make sure that I can use something like that and keep the column shift. I would need to know the angle of the last pipe to tell if I could still shift fine. Coupe man- That part number is the headers that I have on the car right now. It may not look like its the same since all the pictures are of them inside the body. I do have pictures of them on the engine outside the body if anyone wants to see that.
The 4th pipe on the drivers side (cyl #8) goes almost straight down from the port, only very slightly angles backwards.
When this thread opened I was going to suggest hedman tight tubes. Then I learned they're only made for Chevys & Mopars. Those Patriots have the same design as the tight tubes. Good to know
I drew this from a hand drawing that I did with all the measurements. No reason for showing, I just thought I would put it here. Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Hey, I see you're in San Diego. I'm in La Mesa. I'm doing a 55 CustomLine with an 88 302 and AOD and I'm in exactly the same boat. I'm thinking of going with a rack and pinion and then seeing what kind of exhaust fits. If you find what set fits the stock box, holler.
No newer stangs ever came with the GT-40P heads unless the owner put those on himself... The factory headers on the Fox stang GT/LX 5.0 are from '87-'93 and they all had the same E7TE truck heads... I have a set of those headers... If I remember later on tomorrow, I'll snap a photo of those....
