Got some more work done today. FINALLY finished sandblasting the frame, even though it was snowing. Then I installed the rear crossmember, and welded all seems on the frame.

The motor mounts are all fab'd up and installed. I made mine exactly how the Bishop/Tardel AV8 book shows you how. So I can't take any credit for these, But they did come out pretty darn good.

Next I'll Z the frame in the rear. I still don't know what style center crossmember I am going to use. I do know I will be making one.

I stepped the rear crossmember today. Once again going "by the book"
I used some square tubing to match the radius of the frame. Pictures are pretty much self explanatory.

Thanks outlaw. I'm not afraid of the metal work, but I am definitely procrastinating. I took some cowl measurements from the 28-29 coupster that the Pennevillians are building. Once I get the lower portion of the cowl finished I'll have a good reference point to go from. Then it should really start to take off.

I'm starting the sheet metal work today.

Here is the lower filler piece below the decklid (I never know what to call this part) Keep in mind, this isn't a resto. I've got nothing to copy here, so I'm just flying by the seat of my pants.

I've got to go pick up my kid, hopefully I can come back and finish this part tonight.

    Until next time...

I couldn't make it back to the shop tonight like I'd hoped, the wifey wants to put a new floor in the living room. OH JOY!!!

So rather than working on my car I sit here on the computer wasting time and money. I've decided to buy a few items from Howell's Sheet Metal Co. I figure for the price of these replacement panels I'd be way ahead of the game as far as time goes. I ordered a pair of cowl sides and rear lower corners. Slap them puppies on there and I'll have a much easier time lining things up, at a fraction of the work.

    back to business

This is probably the easiest piece on the whole body to make. Fold all 4 sides at a 90*, peen the top fold in, and shrink the two sides to match the curve of the quarters, bend the center over your knee until its good.

I didn't have a heck of alot of ambition today, so I decided to tackle a project that everyone says is a piece of cake (Beeno!) This damn thing took me about 2 hours from start to finish. Simple as hell to do, but tedious.

I know I'm beating a dead horse with the "how to reverse a spring" tech, but here it is anyways.

First I laid the spring on the floor and traced it with soap stone. Then marked out lines at 1" intervals starting in the center and working my way outwards.

I threw it in my shop press and went to town. Here it is after my first pass
    [IMG]

Then after ALOT of jacking, and fine tuning is came out with the finished reversed spring.

I can't imagine how hard this would've been using a BFH and some railroad ties. My arm was getting tired from pumping the jack.

Well, I lost ambition on this. Then put it up for sale in a moment of weakness. Now I'm gonna get back on it. Everyone else on here is making me look bad, time to get to work!

As long as you can weld and do metal work, it should be nice car when it's done. When you get The frame and suspension figured out it should come together nicely

    Started on the cowl today.

The Howell panels went on pretty easy. Now the only sad spot up front is the lower A pillars.

I cut out all the rot.

Now comes the joy of trying to rebuild that post with nothing to go by. I hung a door (and I use that term loosely) just to try get an idea of the overall curvature. I'm still stumped, because the bottom of the door is missing as much as the cowl was:rolleyes:

Can anyone tell me if the outside of the A pillar curves in flush with the panel, or does it stick out about 1/4" - 3/8" ??

I just said fuck it and did what looks right. Good news is I got the metal work on the passenger side A pillar done. I did it in pieces, so there was more welding involved. It went quicker than trying to form it in one piece though;)

Now to get crackin on the other side. I won't post up on that, I imagine it could get pretty boring. If you absolutely HAVE to see it how I am going to make the other side just hold your monitor up to a mirror.

OK, these 1/4s are rough! I think I may go in a new direction on this build. I'm thinking modified. The problem is I don't like most of the 28-29 model A modifieds I see, they all share that square back.

I am thinking about finding the rear of a sedan body and grafting it onto the sport coupe cowl. OR building my own tub... which ever comes up first.

  22. great build! Haha yeah I was looking at those quarters...... the modified idea sounds cool!

Just got back from the woods a little while ago. Unfortunately I forgot my camera, or I would have taken a shot of the car. The "tub" is still in the pickup, I'll try and get it unloaded later. Its from a Buick tudor somewhere between 1926-1928. I can't really tell from my Google search. Its big though, I'm sure there is enough material there to make a tub out of it

I've decided full tub or "ghetto tudor phaeton". It doesnt look like I'll have to shorten it at all, but it is about 4-6" too wide.
