HUNT "fake" magneto help

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Fox Valley Hot Rods, Mar 22, 2011.

  1. I have a customer who came to me with one of those HUNT "fake" magnetos wanting me to install it in his flathead. I have ZERO experience with these and have a question....

This one has 4 wires coming out of it NOT two. My understanding is that this is for an MSD set up? But it can be made to use w/o the MSD box by connecting the 2 black wires together.

    Is this true?

And if so, where do the remaining wires go?

Any and all help is much appreciated :D

Contact these guys they will help you. Just click on contact and either phone or you can e-mail. They re-wired my unit to work with the MSD and it works great, so I got to imagine they know how to undo.

Found my wiring diagram. I will tell you how mine is wired and you can make a decision.
Mine has two sets of two wires coming out each set is one black and one red. One set is shorter than the other.

Short one says coil-- red went to orange of MSD, black went to black of MSD

Long one says module-- red went to ignition switch and MSD red wire, black went to white of MSD

Sorry for the dumb question but why is hunt a fake magneto? I know it's about half the price of a vertex but what is the difference?

    It's just a distributor inside of a magneto-shaped case.

Those other two wires should probably be attached directly to the purchaser's genitals. :)

  7. I have heard real magnetos are not great on the street? Cold starts? Low rpm? I want a magneto for my gasser build but want to drive it, not just race it.

I ran a magneto on the street for years and no drivability issues. More force to turn and did eat up a bronze drive gear once though. And typicaly you'll be giving up vacuum advance.
