I don't often ask for help, but the information I need has totally "slipped my mind", and I need a set of instructions. I have a Hurst Dual Pattern Synchro-Loc originally made for the 55-65 Muncie 318 model transmission. I'm planning on adapting it to the earlier 40-54 torque-tube style 3 speed, as there's no longer a decent shifter made for those transmissions. What I need is, the instructions for how the transmission shift fork/lever bosses are modified to work with the Hurst levers (a groove is ground into the bosses for the Hurst lever U-bolts). The information I need is where the groove is placed. A P.M., or posting directly to this thread is fine; even a detailed enough description would be fine. Last time I worked on one of these transmissions was in the late 60's! I plan on modifying the shifter mounting plate to fit the earlier transmission. Thanks fellow HAMBERS. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
Butch No help on instructions but this really jogged my memory. I bought my first car at 15 years old in 1969, a 61 Impala, 348/3speed, first speed part I ever bought was a used Hurst Syncro-Loc shifter. IIRC, the seller said it was for an Olds, but "it'll fit the Chevy". Well, he was right, it fit, kinda, but the Hurst transmission levers were too long and hit the floorboards. Must have been lucky it worked at all because all I had to do was reattach them pointing down, only problem was; the shift pattern was backwards, worked ok because I had never driven anything else before, so I got used to it. Don't think I had to do anything major like grooving the shafts because about all I had for tools were a couple of crescent wrenches and some screwdrivers. Hardest part of the job was cutting the hole in the floor with a borrowed power "hack".
If the trans you're using is a '40 - '48, a '49 up shift cover will be needed. Several holes don't align & will need to be modified. The u-bolt clamp-on type levers from floor shift kits seldom stayed tight. We had to replace dozens of side covers kids had stick welded after they came loose. Drag Fast made the only shifter that you could install & expect to stay working. The best solution is reworking the factory '49 up shift levers to work with your shifter.
