Accidentally posted this in the wrong forum so reposting it here. I recently purchased a Hurst Mystery Shifter for my 56 Chevy and it actually came with the original instructions dated 1962. I figured I’d share them for anyone who needs them.
I had one in my '57 Chevy back in '66 or '67. The mystery on mine was how to keep the shifter handle from becoming loose.

When they came out Hurst ran an ad campaign, for customers to name the Mystery Shifter. Apparently they didn’t get to many responses. Make mine a SyncroLoc or a Compe***ion Plus; please.
Put a (used) Syncro-Loc in my 61Impala in 1970, was a great shifter, I can imagine the mystery shifter does not have the same "feel". Bought a lot of Comp Plus shifters over the years, I still have two for my projects.
The two Comp Plus shifters I have now were bought in the early 2000's but are new, they are not near as tight as the Hurst shifters from the 60's/70's.
I should have taken a pic, there's a Mystery shifter on a 3 speed Saginaw locally. I can probably get it including the transmission for fifty bucks. What do you guys think? Worth it or leave it?
My Hurst store display has a syncro loc and a mystery shifter on it the Syncro loc is better by leaps and bounds…
Yeah, the Mystery shifter was hamburger and the Syncro Loc was steak; basically a three speed version of a Compe***ion Plus.
As my father remembered form this youth, it because it was a Mystery how a performance shifter could be so cheap. However the joke was it is a Mystery of it shifts at all!
Buy it for your stash Steve ! I have one with a Saginaw 3speed. I had it in my roadster and put many miles on it till i was able to find an affordable 4speed (free at the time!) am thinking of putting it in one of the projects i have percolating.
My 57 had a Fenton shifter in it when I bought it, not sure where they fit in the hierarchy of shifters, wasn't in there very long, swapped in a B/W T-10.
long time ago but, think this cheapo would snap off at base with anything except mild shifting. Just hit the local speed shop and thread on replacement
My high school hot rod...the only "new" parts it ever got was a Hurst Chevy V8 motor mount plate and a Mystery Shifter...both from JC Whitney.
Ha, like I need encouragement to bring more **** home! Rare sure doesn't mean desirable. There's a Dual Pattern Syncro/Loc in the HAMB cl***ifieds right now for cheap. The thread was started 5 years ago and it's well under a hundred bucks, still there. The one I am looking at does have the correct round style Hurst boot. Possible wall hanger.
