Anybody try their " Casler " Cheater slicks ???? After hearing issues about balancing I'm wondering if the extra $$ for Radir ( new not re capped ) might be worth it ??? Suggestions? Thanks in advance...

they suck, especially at the track. as with any recap start putting the weight on, they usually take a bunch to balance. the only thing i can see that is good about them is the look.

Sure wish they sold Hurst at Carlisle?
I'll check out Radirs while I'm there.

The Radir wheel crew are also a great bunch of guys. They make/offer a decent tire as well. I was going to use theirs but then I found out I could get the 'cheater' grooves cut in by Hurst.
I have several thousand miles on my Hurst slicks, both local backroads and longer highway trips.
I have seen both Hurst and Radir slicks at various tracks with similar performance results.

I guess the ? is the Radir's are almost $ 600.00 a pair the Hurst $ 400.00. Both a bit pricey but for $ 600 beans ya gotta be sure.

hey guys, this is a little off topic question here for this thread, but it does pertain to the hurst slicks. I've got a set of the hurst 28 3/4" X 8.5" wide cheaters for 15" rims. I just picked up a set of early merc 15" rims at 5.5" wide. anyone know if the rims will be too narrow for the tire??

kev, they should be ok. the carcasses are usually fairly narrow. The reason for the pie crust is to support the 'tread' section that overhangs the narrow carcass.

I have the Casle on my 65 nova and they work great. They do take alot of weight, but all the old cheaters do. I've had 3 sets of Hurst tires, and loved em all. Good wear, drive well, and have had great service from them.

As I understand it, the Radir slicks use a fair amount of weight to balance as well. I think it is the nature of the beast-Alot of rubber on the outer perimeter. Newer slicks I don't think have as much rubber(thickness) as the piecrust do.

Anyone know what happened at traction by hurst company / adams rubber. I tried to call them to get another pair of slicks but get message number no longer in service, try the cell number the same message. Any e-mail to the shop or Cody get sent right back undeliverable. Thanks for any responce. Bobby.

I think I read in another thread here recently that they are moving and would be closed for about a month? You can probably find it if you do a search.

  17. the best way i have found to balance these tires is to find a hunter road force balancer. they don't just spin the tire. it puts a load on the tire with a roller pushing down on it. it sound strange but it truly works. the newer radirs are a lot softer than their previous tires and hook hard. my durometer reads 45 on the radirs. i can also pull the wheels on my coupe with them. the radirs are new tires not recaps. rich can cut any grooves you want in them.

1961A/D count yourself lucky that you're missing out on dealing with their poor service after the purchase. Only a business that is being run in a half assed manner shuts down for a month with no phone or email service while they move. Just makes no sense. Maybe their immature business practices caught up with them and the doors are closed for good. Give Towel City a try if they have the size you're looking for.

rockfish, thanks for the info. When I got my first set about 3 yrs ago, had no problem, got them when promsed. Was looking for the firestone thread design they have (had?) my lyndowwd Alley Oop had them back them, wanted to keep it looking close to original. Do you have a contact for the shop you mentioned,
    Thanks for the news, Bobby

(really do not want to use coker tire, bad attatude on the phone when I called them, might try rader wheels if the shop you mentioned does not have anything.)

rockfish, Thank you for the contact link, just ordered a set could be here next week, the gentleman on the phone super friendly, asked questions to make sure what I wanted & what for so that they have the right tires coming. I told him to send flyers for the company I have another friend finishing an old style gasser. Best of all price way cheaper than the others and a better guarantee. Again THANK YOU.

Thank you rockfish, just got my Towel City slicks. Look great happy with quality of them, did not know they balance them also. Will tell friend looking for nostalgia slicks and any of their other type tires to look at Towel City.
