I have a 32 coupe with sbc and Muncie 4 speed and want a Hurst competition plus shifter. What shifter best fits with stock 32 bench seat?
I really couldn't say what you need but Hurst makes a bunch of handles for shifters.... The one that comes to mind for your car that might work is the handle they made for tri-five Chevys to clear there bench seats...
I used the above shifter in a 32 roadster with a Glide seat and it worked fine.Part number at Summit 3913780. Another possibility is a Summit number NUU5384084 This lever has a jog to the right at the bottom which gives you a little more leg room.
It depends on your particular Muncies' tailhousing layout, some have multiple bolting locations forward/back. Keep in mind that the bend to clear the bench seat is only part of the equation, many times the handle will need some finessing to point it toward the center to get it away from the drivers leg, the one I chose for my roadster had a bit too much offset so I reduced it a bit. Not a Muncie but you get the idea, I'm sure. The Muncie in my 67 Nova has the shifter mounting bosses somewhat forward compared to other applications, these cars require a very specific shifter.
I used one for 70 chevelle it put the stick in the center of the floor. I don't remember the shifter handle but you should be able to find one that would work
This an old hurst shifter from the '60's. I don't know the year but the lever does not bolt on but it is pushed into a spring retained slot.
I used one designated for a '65 Chevelle. It was the one the put it as far forward and close to the center that I could find. I did have to heat and bend the arm down below the boot area to bend it more towards the center. I have bucket seats, but they touch so it's basically the same as having a bench. This is the only pic I have of it offhand.
if you need to move the handle away from your leg, look at the competition plus bases for either a 68-72 A Body (Chevelle/442/Cutlass) or 67-69 Camaro/Firebird, the base itself has a built in offset to move the handle mounting point more down the centerline of the transmission. Then you can play with various handles. Either the Tri Five chevy handle, or the handle used for doing 3spd floor shift conversions on C10 pickups might work. I think a early 2nd gen F body handle could work as well. In general alot of later 60s muscle cars started moving the shifter towards the center on the floor so they could stop having to make 2 very different center consoles so that would be a good place to look at.
Here is a little trick a friend showed me, it may work on your deuce if required. I did a fair amount of fiddling with the Hurst shifter stick and mount on my Nova. I didn't like the handle that is normally used and because of the limited space in the console I needed it to be perfectly centered. The newer Hurst Competition Plus/ Street Super Shifter mount is somewhat different than the early ones, this allowed me to rotate it forward on one bolt then locate a new second bolt location, seen in this photo, there was just enough adjustment in the rods to work. Ultimately it was slightly too much so I used the original mount hole then "persuaded" the Hurst handle a bit more.
Here is a quick reference guide for handle. shapes. Hurst site will show dimensions, too. You will have to expand this picture to see the part numbers....
