Just Picked this up but no idea what year. 2 levers guessing 1 is p***ing gear ? Appears to be flat 12 bolt pan. Case.. CFD 7 8615013 350 Tag CA-56-2056... Tail housing 8617399 D1 Thought perhaps 56 but thought those were slant pan.
The long outer lever on the bent shaft is the throttle valve lever. It along with the governor controls both the upshift and downshift points of the transmission including kickdown. My manuals are at the shop and I can check the ID tomorrow...
It looks like a 1956 GMC 1/2 ton truck hydramatic. My guess it is meant to bolt up to the Pontiac 316 v8 using the Pontiac front bellhousing.
Fun transmissions - I have ran 2 B&M hydros and currently run a Hydro-Motive Compe***ion unit in my street coupe. On those levers - the outside is a fluid pressure needs to be set right from the start, modified transmissions put lot of force on the lever so needs really needs a mechanical linkage to the carb to work correctly. Also don't touch the two top bolts with lock nuts - they are band adjustment screws and take a special tool to set. If you can get the truck fluid coupling (18bolt?) the tourus has a little more stahl and can be modified for more. If your going behind a SBC the starter can be a real pain, the factory truck bellhousing has to use the rare truck hydro starter - I see starter cores over the $500 - Or - search for a B&M bellhosing adapter, rare part but use the more common p*** car starter. We had a great HYDRO group at one time with lots of good info. Another good source is "How to build your Hydro for street or strip" By Hi-rank corp, A HAMBer sells the reprint and digital files.
Awesome thank you. Does it being for truck limit the bellhousings I can use or are those universal?? Also is the pilot bearing same as standard trans ?
Same bearing size. The trans itself is universal and should bolt to any hydro bellhousing - the truck bellhousing (plus tourus coupling and starter) are needed for mounting to a small block Chevy unless you find an early aftermarket bellhousing like a B&M.
