From what i hear it killed a lot of engines at the drags too untill it was banned. Stories of engine blocks falling in half. Another story relayed to me was of maybe tom senter or one of the early flathead pioneers running a stock flatmotor on it it made amazing HP for about 30seconds
    then let go [IMG]

DON'T **** AROUND WITH THIS STUFF!It is HIGHLY TOXIC! It is of the family of fuels that are known as."oxygen scavengers" their latent heat value increases dramatically in the presence of oxygen.DO NOT BREATHE it in!It is very corrosive to non-ferrous metals when combined with water. It was banned in the 60's from drag racing because some people were mixing it with nitromethane and getting a crude and very unstable form of nitroglycerine!I think Chris Karamesines still holds the "al***ude record" for lofting a GMC blower when an engine he was running with a nitro/hydrazine mix exploded.I think it's still used as an ingredient in liquid-fueled rocket engines.BAD NEWS ****!

Hydrazine and oxygen is basically a hypergolic rocket fuel. In other words, when they are combined, they ignite. If you don't know what you're doing, you're almost certainly going to injure/kill yourself or someone else. [IMG]

Im pretty sure it was one of the components of the witches brew they used in pre war Auto Union and Mercedes Grand Prix cars. I saw a list of the ingredients ( and how much to use of each ) once, so it should not be to hard to find that list, and recreate it.
It was probably very toxic, but remember the time and the place...
    Life was pretty cheap.
you said you have got 20ltr. of the stuff? Great... Is that even going to be enough to rejet your carb to run right on it?

But Mercedes also pulled out of racing for a long time after one of there cars had a bad accident and killed some people. i don't know how many but it was significant enough for them to quit racing for quite a long while. i don't think they thought life was cheap. just my thoughts.

That was in 1955 at the 24 hours of Le Mans, driver Piere Levegh, 83 spectators were killed.
So it was not in 1939, which was the time I was talking about...

Hydrazine is bad stuff. They use it in F16s as an emergency "engine" - they have a very small tank of this stuff they ignite just long enough to land if their engine dies (basically a mini rocket motor). After that, no matter what happened to the engine to cause it to die, it's toast.

Extremely volatile, extremely nasty, will kill you in a heart-beat - bad stuff - stay away. Standard toxic-type absorbed through the skin & inhaled through the lungs - toxicity is extremely high & the amount required to cause brain damage/kill is very low.

This is the type of stuff they invented the skull & crossbones warning labels for!

The stuff kills the cilia in your air p***ages ,possibly on the first breath. It causes cancer in lungs, on skin and maybe even throat if you gasp for breath while working with it. Since you don't have the facilities for making liquid rocket fuel, or storing it, a premix would be crazy to have around. I t makes a conainer of eather look flame resistant! It will eat your carb, fuel lines, the filter could easily deteriorat and **** would plug your carb, then you've got no power.
Then, you could build a pulse jet, or convert an old turbo to a jet engine and have some fun with it in an out door location, up wind of the stuff at all times, hoping you dont die an ugly, painful death for a few kicks.
Probably not a good idea to screw with it, huh? [IMG]

I think they're STILL trying to clean up some stuff like that that they spilled around here back during the space race in the early 50's...

Not positive, but I THINK it was Sneeky Pete who found out the hard way-
that it's so highly oxygenated that it will burn back up the fuel line like a fuse and make your Moon tank into a car bomb.

Buddy note this **** is HIGHLY DANGEROUS rocket propellant it is used on military aircraft to fire the emergency power units on single engine fighters such as an F16. I know because I work on these bad boys. When a spill is detected an amononia sented smell. Anyone who smelled it are rush to the base hospital and given blood test to check for contaimination levels. Take it to some hazzardous collection point in your area notify fire department and collect your clothing in plastic bag, make sure it isolated from other wash. This stuff kills!!!

......OH THANKS GUYS!!! Now........I can just read the headlines......."Psycho-HAMBer turns terrorist!" You know there are some unstable people around here.......speaking of which......where's GERM?? No Christmas greeings from the "King of Tortured Soul" tm ?? [IMG]

  21. If I recall that was the stuff that became really unstable when mixed. Ya had to use it quick. The longer it cooked the more unstable it became.
What you should do is see what color it is. Then mix water and food coloring til it looks right. Put it in a jar, mark it hydrozine and put it on the shelf in the shop.
    Good conversation piece. [IMG]

Flashback -------------1959-63 TopFuel bud of mine ran with
Karamesines and raced in the midwest when smarts & innovations were the equal to cubic bucks. Did not want to kill the two 392's for TF car so, a fun rail was used for testing. Dead stock 308 twin H & hydro was the victim .This was a D dragster at the time that had a high 10 sec flathead pulled to make room for the Hornet and hydro. 12.70 on gas, stage in N ,see glow of last yellow, right foot in water pump, jerk in D. Now add hydrazine and fun fun FUN----low 10s with a best of 9.98. OK OK so the poor 308 died a horrid after a while.

413,409,406,383,327--all bad boy new iron could not understand how a warmed up 55 Olds would kick all tier ***es and take names one weekend in 1963. HEE HEE, dont **** with a ROCKET.
Now do NOT do as i do, DO as your told, nasty stuff, stay away, i was careful--rubber suit , mask out of refinery plus just dumb luck..

  23. You better watch out..! I happen to work on F16's too... If there's a hydrazine (H70) accident everybody should get away from the area to windward direction, so you can not inhale the stuff... It's indeed used in the F16's EPU to power flight controls etc., when there's an in-flight problem..
They always told us that if you inhale this stuff too long you'll eventually die from it... [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

WOW!!! never heard of the **** till now but i think if i was you i'd be getting ahold of poison control or SOMEBODY to come take the **** off my hands. i'd hate to have it get knocked off a shelf at some point and bust open. if you want a conversation piece just take a picture of the container and hang it in the shop. does'nt seem worth the risk to me.

DO NOT DISPOSE OF THIS STUFF BY DUMPING INTO A WATER SUPPLY. 1 OZ OF HYDRAZINE WILL CONTAMINATE 5 MILLION CUBIC FEET OF WATER AND KILL EVERYTHING IN IT!!!!! TURN THIS INTO THE EPA NOW!!!!

As I understand it, alls you need is Hydrogen peroxide pumped thru a mesh of silver wire to create obscene amounts of thrust... can we get a Rocket Scientist to verify?? [IMG]
