just put a fresh hydro in my 52 pontiac straight 8, it shifts 1,2,4, missing 3rd gear, does that sound like a throttle pressure adjustment?

Missing 3rd gear sounds like a valve body problem. If it were a band or clutch you would be missing either 1st or 4th gear too.

What I would do is to dis***emble the valve body and clean it. While dis***embling the valve body check on loose screws. There is a cover that has 3 screws holding the cover to the valve body that if loose will allow the transmission to shift to 4th without engaging 3rd. I had that issue after my hydro valve body was cleaned by a "so called competent transmission shop". I removed the valve body and took it apart in order of what is in the motors manual and found all 3 screws were never tightened down. I re***embled it and reinstalled, after that the transmission shifted properly.
