It looks like a GMC motor maybe 270 or 302 and a 4 speed hydro. If the price is right yes its worth getting. I don't need one but if it were in my backyard I'd pay 2-300 for it and then find something to put it in.

Thanks guys - the vendor has a $1k price tag on the lot, a little too much in my view

How does one tell what ratios the trans has?

The engine in the picture is a civilian 270, 1953 or newer. You can find out if it is a 302 by reading the stamped in serial number on the flat boss by the distributer. First 3 numbers are the cubic inches. It is the correct transmission and all the linkage and other little parts are correct. The price is not out of line if it is a good runner and there are no problems with the engine or transmission. I think the cast iron 4 speed Hydramatics all had the same ratio, hit your head on the back of the cab in low if you really stood on it.

Thanks for the information guys. I appreciate it.

Does anyone still make a shifter for the transmission? I seem to remember that they have a different shifter pattern as compared to later-day transmissions.
