I would pack a 5 gallon fuel jug, 200 miles is not good for distance, thats like a bike. Maybe ask the Jockey Journal this question too? I would pack the fuel.

I've done Mt. in my 34 several times going both ways & on my bike on the return from Alaska. No problems with gas as I needed to stretch around 150 miles anyway. Had a real fast run once when the limit was still "safe & resonable" years ago. good roads, great scenery towards the western half.

The route you are taking on 90 is a good trip .There are towns at fair distance apart.
Just like everywhere else in americia they have walmarts and inside plumbing .Take a camara there is some fantastic scenery .You should be able to find out about road construction on line .The biggest chance for a serious delay and gas usage in my opinion would be the Continental Divide from Whitehall to ****e .
If you have a good car ( and it looks like you do ) you should do fine .There are car builders in Billings Bozeman ****e and Misoula .Lim Kilmer is the worlds oldest NSRA
rep and could probably rettle off a dozen names of people to call if you run into trouble.
    Good Luck

I made that trip in my ol trusty 50 chevy sedan delivery. Ran a 406 SB with a 4 speed so I used some gas. I carried a 5 gallon can with me but never had to use it...plenty of gas stops..
I-90 was a nice smooth road when I drove it in the delivery...was early summer. At that time Montana had no speed limit. I was loafin along in the ol car at about 65 when 2 young chicks p***ed me in a Nissan SUV...pathfinder? Hell I don't remember what it was but I watched them go out of sight when I realized I was in Montana---no speed limit! I kicked it up into 3rd and gave chase. The 2.29 gears with 406 cu in of grunt got me up to about 125 in a hurry...p***ed them at about 130 and they were doing about 100...what a great feeling!
Be prepared for sporatic rain storms. I had no problem using rainex. It's a pretty drive..well worth it.

No one in Texas Has big enough balls! LOL:p

I'd Love to fly down and drive back! Trip of a life time! to bad it would be weird since we don't know each other.... If you need anything once you reach Washington look me up, otherwise I will see you(and introduce myself) and drool all over your car when you get here.

Btw, I've made the trek between Montana and Washington many times in a OT 72 blazer. Point is, it has a 200 mile range....never been a problem for me.

Yes, and actually both entering and leaving Spokane both ways. The fast lane headed west up the I90 hill is the way to go, I do it every weekday. Not bad once your out of town though. I am envious, what a trip.

You'll be fine B***. Through Montana it's nice wide and strait roads with citys/gas stations all over. Once you hit ID you only got an hour or so to Spokane...the pan handle is pretty short. I also second the gas can...just in case. And like I said, call me with any problems if your getting near.

    Have fun and be safe!

I have an 18 gallon ( I think that's right) gas tank in the car, but I only get about 14 mpg @ 80 mph. So that works out to about 250 miles per tank.

I think I should be fine as long as I stay on top of it.

Here's what I'm thinking about for a trip itenerary:

Day 1: Dallas to Denver (About 800 miles)
Day 2: Denver to Billings, MT (about 555 miles)
Day 3: Billings to Spokane (about 540 miles)
Day 4: Spokane to Seattle (about 280 miles)

I'd like to stop by Custom Auto while in the Denver area...I need to get ahold of Dave Crouse I guess.

If I don't leave until Wednesday morning, the driving days are going to be a lot longer.

Thanks for the help and advice, guys!

i have done it a few times.
as mentioned take an extra gas can if you can.
it was in a newer truck for work with gps, so basically i was just looking a the scenery, but i do remember a long stretch out side of rapid city into mt some where that had big time road construction. like 30 miles of ****ed up dirt/mud roads with very little fuel stops. if i remember correctly there was a about 120 mile stretch with 1 stop total.

maybe someone with local knowledge can pin point the location?

    diffently hit up mt rushmore.

I think 18 gallons is about right for the tank in your car if it's the one I'm thinking of.

I can't believe Michael isn't going with you. Wonder if he'd let me borrow his street rod, that things even got air conditioning doesn't it? :D

Good luck on the trip Brian.

    Ain't that the truth!

    .
B***, Montana highways are some of the best there are and most people will be doing at Least 75.....

If you stick to the main highways you wont have any problems with running low on fuel.

The trip from ****e thru Missoula to Coeur d'Alene Idaho is very scenic with relatively little traffic to contend with. Coeur D'Alene is one of the nicest areas in the pacific north west and
the scenery remains spectacular thru Idaho all the way up into Seattle.

I have put a lot of miles on the clock just cruising Montana's Back roads and there isn't a bad or boring highway to be seen.
I personally like to get off the beaten path and take the smaller 2 lane blacktop (as a shortcut) to the larger cities. -There's still lots of old tin to be seen along the rural highways but it sounds like your trip will keep you somewhat south of the great plains of the central part of the state.
Irregardless of which route(s) you take thru Montana there will be lots of scenery to take in and the drive should be enjoyable with relatively light traffic at times even on the major routes.

    good luck with your trip.

I drove from Seattle to just past Spokane into Idaho last summer and my truck was fine on gas, it also gets 14mpg, I think I actually made it all the way into Idaho before filling up, although my truck was pretty thirsty at that point lol. So you should be good to go on that stretch. Cant wait to see your car at the show, I hoping there will be a real good turn out this yr.

Nice easy drive in good weather.
If gas is a problem, which it should not be, maybe your tank is too small.
But I found enough gas stops all thru there.
Ritzville WA is a interesting stop.

Broke down there a few years back.
    Nice car folks there.

Like ***us said, we should be just ahead of you with the truck and trailer----you have my number if you need anything.
Shooting for Spokane by Wednesday night and will be there until Friday morning, then heading over early Friday to Tacoma.
    Western Montana is beautiful!

I-90 has gas every 30 miles minimum, except way out in Wyoming maybe 50. Eastern Montana and that part of Wyoming are the Plains - hot and boring. Take a few minutes for a run uptown in ****e, kinda cool and a couple of decent restaurants. +2 for the Deer Lodge prison and museum. Bozeman is a college & ski town.

I used to carry a 5 gallon on trips, but now I've trimmed down to 2 1/2. My odometer is accurate but not my gas gauge... :D

That is a nice route up to Durango, and its a cool little town, but he has a mission in Denver. I second Coer D' Alene Idaho as a great place. There is a stretch of road running north from Thermopois? Wyoming into Montana, has any one ever run this road? It was scenic, and exciting to drive.

Denise, I had a very similar route laid out for coming home from Bonneville. I'll hit a lot of that except for the 191 highway up to Jackson Hole. I'm pretty sure I'll go through Green River, Grand Junction, and Durango on the way home.

Which brings up another option...I could hit I-80 from Cheyenne to Rock Springs, WY and then take the 191 up through Yellowstone to Bozeman. This would be on day 2 (Wednesday). Looks like it would add about 70 miles to the trip, and would probably change my stopping point on Wednesday night to Jackson Hole.

Your thinking taking the 191 through Yellowstone is going to be worth going a little out of the way, I take it? That might work!

Don't let paint/uphostery stop you from enjoying your car. Consider the stone chips etc. badges of honor/signs of driving it. I was on 191 out of West Yellowstone to Bozeman last month and there was some construction going on then. Might be done now, then again maybe not. Beautiful scenery out there enjoy it and don't worry about the gas situation. As said there are enough stations that as long as you pay attention there's no need to worry. One thing you might do is check your route in advance using this site http://www.gasbuddy.com/map_gas_prices.aspx
