To think I actually enjoyed watching the total destruction of dozens, if not hundreds, of 1930's Fords. Who would have imagined 60 years in the future.
Have several hours of tapes of jalopy racing from my Dad's days of racing jalopys. Really cool to set down and watch of occasion.
Many just like a crumpled bit of paper and just thrown in the bin. Go out and find a clean sheet of paper and start again. Sad end to some fantastic old iron. Excellent viewing all the same.
Hey C, Nice film of the destruction going on that screen. It was something we went to just a few miles away at Ascot Stadium in Gardena. (or on Channel 5 KTLA during the weekend events.) This was made with some hokey music and the versions we watched on TV were always given the Dick Lane classic description of the action going on the screen. That guy was a character and well known on TV and at the races. "Whoa, Nellie..." Yes, for all of the hot rodders today, that destruction of the 30s style cars is a little of a shock. But, remember, those were during the 50s and the cars were 20 years old. Jump up a few years and the 50s cars took over during some of the circle races at Ascot and other tracks. So, we were all spectators to the destruction back then and I suppose, that led to the favorite thing to do at any action event, wait for some accidents and total chaos. Jnaki One thing those races did was to give us favorites in those early days. Also, accepting the fact that they look like the neighborhood hot rods having a ton of fun. But, when we started to watch our own 50s style hot rods and cruisers racing, now we all accepted it and rooted for our favorites, too. It was addicting… Mole Hill, Ca?
I barely remember when my dad took me to the jalopy races in the early 50s. Even as a little twit, I remember enjoying watching them. Especially the figure 8 races, hardly anyone survived those.
This was back when the old cars were plentiful, just think some of the car running out there vwere worth a bundle today. HRP
That was a great clip, only thing missing was the sounds of the race cars. Thanks for bringing back those preciousness memories from a different track at a slightly different time, but pleasant just the same. We had a local dirt track, when I was a kid, my parents took me to the races every Sunday night. They used to race those coupes back then, before they went to the "late models". Those images of the cars coming off that #4 turn are forever burned into my brain. That is what got me started in this old car hobby. I did my time on that local dirt track long after the coupes were gone, I was one of those guys that was destroying the late 60s and early 70s performance cars. Much like the old coupes, those performance cars I wrecked were pretty cheap entertainment. None of the cars I used would have ever survived until now, most of those 1966-1971 cars were already pretty rough in the 1975-1976 time frame when I started using them. Had some of them survived, they would have been worth some coin by today's standards, but they sure weren't back then. I suspect the coupes we saw on the clip were in about the same condition as those performance cars I killed. Gene
