"Those kinds of traffic numbers are absurd impossible unbelievable and if we were supported by adverti*****t dollars, we would have been rich. However, we arent And we arent for a reason. The Jalopy Journal and the H.A.M.B. is very much a business at this point, but we arent in the business of hosting mindless traffic for Alexa numbers and adverti*****t dollars. We are in the business of spreading the gospel of traditional hot rods and customs to people that love and cherish them. And you know what? As valuable as that mindless traffic is, its not nearly as valuable to us as the folks that really support us with valuable content and loyalty." Well said! I can't express how happy I get when we get an email from someone who REALLY appreciates traditonal style cars.. -Juan
Interesting impact for those OT post. I did not see either of the two post referenced but it must have been really popular with the m***es. I do not fully understand how a thread would get linked to other sites (maybe someone who knows can explain) and cause such large traffic but agree we all have to walk a fine line at times on what we post and whether its geared towards the mission statement of this site.. So Ryan do you monitor the usuage of new names and delete them if no use after some amount of time.. .
And the little 15 year old blonde said .. WHATEVER.......... I dont understand where your going with this? Dave
phew, that's a lot of page views in a day coming out of the blue. And I barely noticed the outages - just once in fact. Kudos from someone who helps build large web sites for a living, that's pretty cool. And welcome to all the new lurkers Now pay Ryan his $50.
Digg.com is one of the highest trafficked sites in the world... Believe it is close to top 50 these days. Essentially, users submit links to the site (in this case, threads from the HAMB) and other users vote on them for quality. If you make the homepage like we did, you get an incredible amount of unrelated traffic for the most part. Fark.com isn't much different in that they funnel an amazing amount of traffic to other sites. We got listed twice there in the last 24 hours as well... The point of my post is that we can't let off-topic posts effect the reliability of the site no matter how popular they are... The people that support this place are too important too allow it.
Got ya.. thanks for the clarfication (spelling) . Ya it just stopped for a while and others noticed it too. But then again people see it... Dave
I just hope it does not bring a flood of ******** posts here with 1000 new members. Although the HAMB is more mainstream (widely acceptable maybe?) in recent years the quality of the content is still high and that is why I am here...the content, not the ********. Bill
It is really nice that there isn't a ridiculous amount of ads cluttering the borders of this site, on that note there aren't any!
I have the newest member registrations on a watch list... They will not be causing any wide spread issues.
Does how much we post slow down the host? or is it just the amount of people that visit the site? Finally is there a way to ***ociate computer terms with say... holley parts so the rest of us can figure out what all this digg and fark stuff means?
Locomotive... not your fault at all man... that was a quality post... and I will bring it back once it calms down... I want to hear an audio clip of that thing!
In my experience, the number of posts on here will be irrelevant. it's the visitors that affect the server(s). Although with caching even that can be minimized under nromal cir***stances. Of course, yesterday wasn't normal.. Think of bandwidth as gas flow. Yesterday we tried flowing 20000cfm into a 600cfm vacuum secondary.
Yeah the HAMB should sell advertising. You can get all the cool looking banner adds all over the place. HOT ROD CONDOMS. SUZY HATCHET FACE PINUPS. VonTINGLER'S KUSTOM RAT ROD PAINTINGS. All that cool "traditional" stuff.
Tech week?........and be very active with the "delete" post.......some stuff has been real crazy in the last couple of weeks and I feel bad that I replied on them with a "who cares".......why keep it on top. Chris Nelson Kansas Oh yea, real slow here.........and even typing this drags the cursur down.
I think it is rare in these days of everyone trying to make $$$ out of forums and sites that this forum stays true to its focus on why we are all here. The fact that you (Ryan) felt you needed to explain the performace issues right there tells me what this forum and the message of the H.A.M.B is all about. I have great respect for all who take the time out of thier day to help, encourage and share thier thoughts with other clearly insane car people on the traditional rod and custom scene.
i totally missed the post. but i did try to get on here and couldnt but it was only for a few minutes. kudos to the crew here at the hamb you did a great job quelling it all.
1,000 new people! WOW. With any luck they'll leave once they realize the content and smack talking ability of the HAMB. Many other sites don't allow cuss words at all - even if your name really is ****. But, what if, out of those thousand people, there is one dude who ends up loving this forum? An old timer, who's seen and done it all, and is happy as hell to see others like him. Well, then this whole fiasco might be worth it...maybe.
God I love this place. You guys are absolutely crazy and maxed out on the ******** when it comes to great old cars. I love it. Please don't change it. The Beepster has spoken
After I read Ryan's post yesterday it made me realize how great a thing he has going on here... I pony'ed up my $50 right then and there. Hell the amount of stuff I learned from just searching and reading here probably saved me from buying $500 worth of books. Thanks a ton for everything your doing here Ryan!
