Go without the tarp on the car.
You're asking for WAY more problems than it's worth.
The LEAST of which,it "catching air" and ripping the bungie cords loose(think parachute).
Another is the cords or rope slapping the car from "air vibration" at freeway speeds and really doing some metal damage.

If you're worried about hitting rain on the way, pull over, cover it and wait for it to pass.
It may seem like a hassle, but that will give you an excuse to stretch your legs on the long road trip.
It's not like the clouds are gonna form in seconds, you'll know if it looks like it's going rain.

I made it back home safe!! You were ALL right, the tarp lasted about 20 miles:eek:.

The ride was nice but soooooo long, and the weather was perfect!! A TARP!! What was i thinking??

If you need to do that again, wrap the car in landscape plastic and band it with duct tape in about 10 spots. I hauled a bare-metal car on an open trailer thru 500 miles of winter road salt splash, no problems other than the old time rodders telling me it would only last 20 miles before we left :D
