If you can find some thing close in stainless you can whittle it down with a file and a drill held in a vice or hold it in a drill press, then polish it. Just a thought.

  7. Here's the pic of a similar bolt on my '07 HD bagger. Rear bag protector to frame behind a cover.

Comments about my dirty motorcycle are off topic lol.

Head of bolt is just peaking out on the right of the chrome bar.

I can't tell what size it is without dismantling the bike and Harley shop isn't waking up for another hour.

Couldn't you use repro early V8 door hinge screws which have the narrow head and stamped csk washer. The ones I am thinking about are 32 coupe..

We use the bolts you pictured in work, on retail displays but I am on the wrong side of the atlantic...

I know where Oakman is... I'm just a few blocks west from there in Dearborn but farther north near Ford Rd. I used to be a tow truck driver in the early '80's around that part of the neighborhood.... Scary!!

  11. Thanks. However that is not the technical, or proper name of the bolts being pictured.
pan head machine screws are different.

    That avitar is great!

  12. Nice job divco,
Thanks for helping and showing those are an option but they are different and would require some modification to use them.

How freaking hard can it be to get a bolt?

  13. Just got off the phone with acme nut and bolt.
He new exactly what I wanted but said I'd have trouble finding them. They don't have them.

  14. Searched Aaron's last week, don't Have them

I haven't read the whole thread so you may have stated the size before. Crown forklifts use them. I just ran across a couple of different sizes in the drawer I was looking for something else in. Give me a size and I will see if I can come up with a part number. Dennis D

  17. As you can see they exist. & right under our ****s in some cases
And as You can see the proper name is as illusive as the bolts.
"Cheese head" brings images of that head style however a slot drive.
Got a bit of info from a few places that say terminology is extremely loose in the fasteners world. Hence the photographs of bolts. One Guy I spoke to this am said they were called "special low head torx" only available in metric and 6x20 mm was the largest available. So that's not the name either

Harley has that bolt listed as a "1/4-20 knurled head torx " But it certainly isn't knurled head by definition or like any other I've ever seen. They had to call it something but didn't know either so made one up. Searching that brings up thumb screws.

  18. 5/16 24 x 1 stainless is preferred but I don't know about that at this point.
    metric would be 8x25 mm
7/8 is the absolute minimum amount of thread.

These are 18 thread not 24. Let me email my contact at the Crown factory and see if I can find out where they source them. I'll get back to ya. Dennis D

Got an "out of office reply" I won't be able to find out anything until Monday. D

I found mine (if these look the same) at the local Ace/True Value. It's been a while since I did that, but I think they were longer, had to be cut and tapped up to the head (had a shoulder) for my application. I was more worried about the head design.

They are in the hardware section under "furniture fasteners".

PM me if you still have trouble finding them.

    Attached Files:

  22. The specs on "low head" 5/16 bolts.
    Bolt diameter 0.3125 or 5/16
    Head diameter 0.437 or 7/16

Actual clamping surface of that bolt is ( .437-.3125 ) or 0.1245 or. 062 per side
7/16-5/16 = 2/16. 1/16 for each side . Seems kind of useless doesn't it and why low heads wont work.
Maybe the specs are incorrect, but every site that had specs had the same data.

Can any body verify this with an actual measurement of a part in hand.

I measure 9/16 on the bolt head on the ones that I have. 7/8" long. Crown part number is 120544-002. I know you have a dealer nearby, hopefully they will have them in stock for you to look at. Dennis D
