I have a ring and pinion that I'm trying to I.D. The number stamped into the pinion is 3744096. The number stamped into the ring gear is 3725808. These are stamped as GM numbers and the gear ratio is a 4:88. The stamped date code is 1-63, (Jan. 1963). I believe that this is a gear set for a 1955 - 1962 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup rear axel, but I'm not sure. I'm trying to positively ID them through the part numbers. Unfortunately, my 1960 Chevy parts book does not list gears as low as 4:88's. I did find the part number for a 4:88 gear set for a 1/2 ton, (3731171), but not the part numbers for the individual ring and pinion gears. A friend of mine has a early 60's gasser styled 53 Stude with a 57 Chevy 1/2 ton rear axel and hopes that these are the right gears for this axel. Can anyone ID these gears? Thank you, in advance.
Thanks Carmuts. However, I tried this and nothing came up. I tried the part number for a 4:88 gear set, (3731171), and the gear set showed up, but the individual gear part numbers do not. It is the part numbers for the individual ring and pinion that I'm trying to confirm.
Anyone??? My parts books list matched ring and pinion sets under one part number, and then have the individual ring and pinion part numbers in parenthesis. Unfortunately, my books do not list 4;88 gear sets.
You could have ran across a gear set from Chevrolets 1957 racing program. The pick up 6 lug rear end went under all the black and white 150 utility sedans ran in NASCAR.They had gear sets as low as 6.33.The lower gear sets made use of a split pinion pin due to the ring gears being so thick.Every one of those gear sets I purchased over the parts counter at Chevrolet had the "split pin" included with it.
or it could be a car set and someone forgot what it was for? measure the bearing race sizes on the pinion gear, look up the bearings and see
